Karodia, Atkinson continue Polo title fight in the Cape
It’s a two way battle for the title with more than enough disruption looming as the see-saw 2025 Astron Energy Polo Cup title chase returns to the Cape for three more races on Saturday 13 September. With only one heat run at a dramatic East London last time out, the Polo Cup drivers have three bites of the apple when the fifth round National Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola descends on the Killarney International Raceway this weekend.
All eyes are on the top of the log, where Johannesburg drivers, young gun Mohammed Karodia Fast 5 Motorsport LTR Polo GTI heads to the Cape with a ten point advantage over returning veteran Rory Atkinson’s Industry Petroleum version. It’s been a cat and mouse battle of swings and roundabouts, but the leaders have far more than just each other to be concerned about this weekend.
There is for instance the small matter of the three-point battle for third between the ever-improving Volkswagen Rookie Cup champion Judd Berthold, Dainfern Dental doctor Hannes Scheepers and Ethan Coetzee’s ECR LTR Polo. Each of whom would love to win a race or two to fortify their claim on that title third. But that’s not all. AF Fans lass Tyler Robinson has already tasted victory and was on pole last time out at Killarney. So never count her out.
Nor the four who close out the top ten. Dubcorp driver Shrien Rajpaul from Durban, Sabertek veteran Charl Smalberger, Team Red lad Roshaan Goodman and Production X Rookie Cup graduate Dhivyen Naidoo. All of whom have the potential to upset, any time. Also keep an eye on Insurisk lad Anthony Lessing, Bevin Masters’ CPS Warehouse car and Kyalami Exhausts lad Nirav Singh, Team Red rookie Milan Emslie, FSS entry Pierluigi Muzzulini and Bjorn Bertholdt’s Sizanani machine.
Wayne Masters is well ahead on the Astron Energy Polo Masters chase in his Performance Master Polo. In fact, a good haul at Killarney could well see him crowned among South Africa’s first 2025 champions on Saturday. Rest assured his old rivals, John Kruger’s Habot Oils Polo, Derick Smalberger’s Sabertek version and PABAR man Mike Barbaglia are hell-bent to prevent that. Also watch for Norbrake pilot Gavin Ross, Elio Muzzulini’s FSS International car, Roberto Franco’s Graphix Supply Polo and George Smalberger’s Shield entry among the Masters.
Astron Energy Polo Cup races three times as part of a full and exciting National Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola race program on Saturday 13 September. The meeting will also be streamed live via Volkswagen Motorsport and Extreme Festival social media. Unless of course you’re in the Cape, which means see you at Killarney!
