National Extreme Festival circus is on its way to Cape Town

Cape Town is braced for explosive racing action as the National Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola heads to the Killarney International Raceway for its penultimate sixth round on Saturday 13 September. With championships on the line across the board and a thrilling new single seater class coming to the Cape for the first time, race fans are in for a treat.

Always a Killarney favourite, fans have three bites of the Extreme Supercars driven by Dunlop apple when the series rejoins the Festival after a few rounds away on Saturday. Jonathan du Toit’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO was unstoppable last time out. So GT3 rivals Charl Arangies’ rumbling Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO and Gianni Giannoccaro’s Nissan GTR R35 GT3 will have him in their sights in the Cape. Expect home resistance from the likes of Dane Angel’s Ferrari 488 GT3 and variety in the form of Kris Budnik’s Dodge Viper, Giacomo Giannoccaro’s Audi R8 and local man Mike Verrier’s BMW Corvette. And will Paarl hero Dawie Joubert be out in his fearsome Lotus Ferrari?

Killarney fans will also enjoy their first glimpse of the new Investchem MSA4 single seaters on Saturday. KC Ensor-Smith has enjoyed the early advantage in the new turbo-litre Volkswagen powered wings and slicks class over the likes of Mikel Bezuidenhout, Karabo Malemela, Shrien Naidoo and Renzo Ribeiro. Also keep an eye on class veterans Nicholas van Weely and Alex Vos, and lady racers Anastasia Gerasis and Simphiwe Mohlahlo. A field of old school Formula Ford Kents will join the MSA4 grid in the hands of some equally classic drivers.

The main attraction however has to be the South African Touring Cars. Rustenburg veteran Michael van Rooyen is creeping ever closer to realising his long held dream of a maiden title at Killarney in his Toyota. But not if home hero Julian van der Watt, rookie Volkswagen Golf GTI teammate Jagger Robertson or Keegan Campos and his BMW 128 have anything to do about it. Van Rooyen also has Toyota teammates Sa’aad Variawa and Nathi Msimanga in his corner, while Andrew Schofield’s BMW will be out to back the other three in their title aspirations.

Behind them, it's more likely that the Killarney faithful will have one of their own to toast on Saturday as Tate Bishop closes in on the SATC SupaCup championship. All the former karting prodigy needs do is follow his last remaining title rival Jonathan Mogotsi home to clinch it in his Volkswagen SupaPolo. Also expect the usual wild fight between the likes of Dawie van der Merwe’s solo Toyota SupaStarlet and a gang of SupaPolos. They include Polo champions Charl Visser and Jason Loosemore, racing lass Karah Hill, Zimbabwean Dylan Pragji, Nicolaos Vostanis, Muhammad Wally and local wildcard David Franco. Dad Rob Franco and Andre Bezuidenhout will duel for Masters honours.

The Astron Energy Polo Cup is always a cracker at Killarney. Fans can look forward to three heats of action Saturday as championship leaders Mo Karodia and Rory Atkinson continue their fight for the 2025 title. Behind them, top rookie Judd Bertholdt will duke it out for third with Hannes Scheepers and Ethan Coetzee, with racing lass Tyler Robinson close behind ahead of a seething pack of eager young racing hopefuls. Wayne Masters meantime faces the prospect of wrapping a back to back Astron Energy Polo Masters title up at Killarney. John Kruger, Derick Smalberger and Mike Barbaglia are out to stop him.

Talking about champions, Clinton Seller is likely to wrap up a consecutive SunBet ZX 10 Masters motorcycle title on Saturday, no matter what Damion Purificati, Graeme van Breda, Jayson Lamb, Hein McMahon, Adriaan van Dalen, and Keith Agliotti, among those get up to at Killarney. And it seems that all three Toyota Gazoo Cup classes should produce their champions too. Jason Coetzee has a huge GR86 Rookie advantage, Nabil Abdool is all but done in the GR Yaris Media Cup and Mario da Souza is within touching distance of the GR Corolla Dealer title. The Volkswagen Rookie Cup is however far from over for 2025 as Josh Moore and Chris Tait fight over the title with Marco da Luz and Uzair Khan snapping at their heels.

With practice Friday and qualifying before the racing commences later in the morning, the Cape Town Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola is the place to be on Saturday. See you at Killarney. Or catch the action live streamed via the Extreme Festival social media platforms.
