Tight battle looms on Volkswagen Rookies' Cape return

Two young drivers are fighting it out, with two others ready to pounce as Volkswagen Rookie Cup returns to join the National Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola at the Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town on Saturday 13 September.

Second year rookie karting prodigy Josh Moore arrives with a three point advantage over VW Challenge Class C champion Christopher Tait in the chase. Both of them and another ever improving karter, Mauro Da Luz shared out the Aldo Scribante wins last time out at Gqeberha.

2024 runner-up, Durbanite Uzair Khan is hell-bent on making up lost ground. The top four are separated by 19 points with 48 points left on the table. Behind them, another karting graduate, Luke Hill is a lonely fifth, but it’s a tight chase for sixth between racing lass Berlin Robinson and novice Luke Corbett.

“We look forward to the 2025 Volkswagen Rookies continuing to impress at Killarney as much as they have through the season so far,” Volkswagen Head of Motorsport Mike Rowe concludes. “We are back to the National Extreme Festival this weekend at a crucial stage of the season.

“This year’s Volkswagen Rookie Cup champion will progress to Astron Energy Polo Cup with Volkswagen Motorsport in 2025. There are however other opportunities open to the rest of the drivers, so Killarney is a most important weekend for them and we wish them all the very best of luck in the Cape.”

A Volkswagen Motorsport initiative open to young racing drivers between 14 and 16 years of age who hold a valid MSA licence, Rookie Cup is designed to deliver a seamless transition for that all-important step up to main circuit motor racing.

Rookie Cup works as an academy of motor racing that reaches beyond just best racing lines, ideal brake markers and racecraft. Recruits are trained in every aspect of racing with an eye to a future career on track. Young drivers interested in joining can email driving@vwsa.co.za with the subject line ‘Ref: VW Rookie Cup’, and Volkswagen’s dedicated Rookie Cup team will be in touch.

*Volkswagen Motorsport salutes its Rookie Cup racing partners, Dunlop Tyres, Astron Energy, Sparco and Volkswagen Advanced Driving.
