Great racing, action across all Extreme Festival classes

Aldo Scribante treated Gqeberha fans to some great national motor racing when the Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola thrilled Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday. Keegan Campos and Saood Variawa shared the South African Touring Cars wins. Dominant double win performances saw Tate Bishop take SATC SupaCup, Mo Karodia Astron Energy Polo Cup, Clint Seller the SunBet ZX10 Masters motorcycles and Jason Coetzee the Toyota Gazoo Racing Cup. Josh Moore and Christopher Tait shared the  Volkswagen Rookie Cup wins.

Keegan Campos took a close pole position before clearing off to an easy win in the opening South African Touring Car race in his BMW 328tc. Michael van Rooyen’s Toyota Corolla found its way around Julian van der Watt’s VW Golf for second, ahead of Saood Variawa’s Corolla, Jagger Robertson’s Golf and Nathi Msimanga’s Corolla. Msimanga, Variawa and van Rooyen’s Toyotas then squabbled ahead of van der Watt, and Campos early in the second reverse grid race, before Variawa muscled ahead to leave chaos in his wake. Van Rooyen came home second from Campos with Msimanga and Andy Schofield’s BMW, leaving the stewards reviewing all that action after.

Racing on their own for the first time on the more relaxed Aldo Scribante race program, log leader Tate Bishop took the SATC SupaCup pole position before making off to a double victory, and five wins in six races. Jonathan Mogotsi muscled impressive rookie Muhammad Wally out of his way for second ahead of the youngster in race 1 with Charl Visser, Jason Loosemore and Dawie van der Merwe’s solo Toyota SupaStarlet sixth among the horde of VW SupaPolos. Mogotsi could not repeat his block on Visser in race 2 as Visser came home from Mogotsi, Wally, Loosemore, and lady racer Karah Hill.

It was all about Mohammed Karodia as the Astron Energy Polo Cup at the class’ home round just around the corner from Volkswagen Plant Kariga. Karodia topped qualifying and then Superpole before putting in two hard fought races to win both and take the day. It was a good day for Volkswagen Rookie Cup champion Judd Bertholdt, who ended third overall behind Charl Smalberger as they shared the second places, ahead of Roshaan Goodman, Shiren Rajpaul and Rory Atkinson overall. Wayne Masters and John Kruger shared out the Astron Energy Masters wins.

There was drama in qualifying for the SunBet ZX10 Masters motorcycles when champion Clinton Seller was sent to the back of the grid of both races for forgetting to stop in parc ferme in one of the sessions. All that did was show just how quick Seller really is as he raced from the back to the front to win race 1 from Damion Purificati, Class B winner Graeme Van Breda and top C man Jayson Lamb, David Enticott, Adriaan van Dalen and Hein McMahon. It was much the same in race 2 as Seller came from the back to beat, van Breda, Lamb, Enticott, Purificati and Keith Agliotti.

Sophomore Josh Moore made best use of his home advantage when he overcame fellow second season racer Uzair Khan to take Volkswagen Rookie Cup honours. Rookies, Luke Hill, Mauro Da Luz and Christopher Tait followed from Giovanni Fiorotto, who was later relegated to seventh behind Berlin Robinson after some contact between them. VW Challenge Class C champion Christopher Tait then took his maiden Rookie Cup win from overall winner Khan, Moore, Da Luz, Luke Corbett and Fiorotto in race 2.

Jason Coetzee strolled to another two Toyota Gazoo Racing Cup wins ahead of GR86 Rookie rivals Mbuso Ngwenya and Justin Rogers each time. Mario de Sousa won both GR Corolla Dealer wins from from Werner Venter and Riaan De Ru in race 1 and ahead of Paul de Vos and Venter in the second. Nabil Abdool took both New GR Yaris Media win from Phuti Mpyane and Kyle Kock.
