SATC and SupaCup pace men will fight back at Aldo

The South African Touring Cars and SupaCup championship logs both make for interesting reading heading towards the third round Extreme Festival at Aldo Scribante in Gqeberha on Saturday 10 May.

With several changes in the field between the first and second rounds, neither of the top two have won a race. The rest have either not raced both those Killarney or Kyalami rounds, or they’ve run rather short on luck if they have. It’s a slightly different scenario in the SATC SupaCup, where the top three have dominated between them so far.

Veteran South African Touring Cars championship leader Michael van Rooyen has not won a race this far in 2025 aboard his SVR Steelworks Toyota Corolla. Twice second and carrying a pole position bonus point from Kyalami, Michael has been consistent through the changes around him. Now with two young chargers now chasing him down however, van Rooyen will need to start winning to keep them behind.

Second, and a revelation of the season so far, rookie Investchem Formula 1600 champion Jagger Robertson has also been consistent in his Chemical Logistics Sparco WCT Volkswagen Golf GTI. Two feature race thirds and a reverse grid second at Kyalami see Jagger in a strong championship second. Teammate and pole man at both Killarney and Kyalami, Julian van der Watt has been out of luck in the races. He will be looking for a step up at Aldo, where he arrives tied for third in the chase with Anthony Pretorius, who left to race abroad after dominant display in the Killarney season opener.

Behind them, neither of the Kyalami race winners, Saood or Keegan Campos raced the season opener. So they’re playing catch up and can be expected to be in the thick of the Scribante action. Fifth and sixth in the chase, Variawa skipped the season opener but struck to win the first Kyalami race before a scrappy second heat. Campos took over the Chemical Logistics FAST Racing BMW 128tc vacated by Pretorius, had a tricky first race, but bounced back to win the second in the car now sporting striking new Campos Transport colours. Their progress promises a keen South African Touring Car attraction.

For the rest, Andrew Schofield will be looking for better luck after a trying start to his season in the FlySafair Chemical Logistics FAST BMW 128tc. Newcomer Siyabonga Mankonkwana is getting to grips with his Chemical Logistics FAST Toyota Corolla and
Nathi Msimanga is out to put his troubled Kyalami comeback weekend behind him in the second Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla.

Also on the South African Touring Cars bill, there’s just as intriguing, a battle going down in SupaCup. On the face of it, Cape Town’s Angri Racing LTR SupaPolo lad Tate Bishop appears in full control with three straight race wins to one over Kyalami second race winner Jonathan Mogotsi’s Volkswagen Motorsport Genuine Parts version. Indeed Bishop dominated at home at Killarney, but the title table does not reflect Mogotsi’s true Kyalami form after Mogotsi lost that first win when he was slapped with a penalty.

Jonathan is racing at his team’s home race this weekend, so should remain on the front foot. Third man Charl Visser is also very much a factor in his Charl Engineering SupaPolo and he’s also well proven to be quick at Scribante. SupaCup rookie Dawie van der Merwe is the Toyota Gazoo Racing SupaStarlet wildcard among all the Volkswagen SupaPolos. He’s doing a pretty good job of it so far to sit fourth in the chase ahead of a much improved Nicolaos Vostanis and Astron Energy Polo Cup champion Jason Loosemore looking for a step up in the second Volkswagen Motorsport entry.

Zimbabwean Dylan Pragji’s Stylin Auto car sits sixth in the chase ahead of Kalex lass Karah Hill, Graphix Supply lad David Franco, newcomer Niko Zafiris, Platinum Mile driver Dean Venter, rookie karting champion Muhammad Wally and Masters man Andre Bezuidenhout.

With practice on Friday, qualifying Saturday morning and two races through the day, the South African Touring Cars and SupaCup, star on a full Aldo Scribante Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola. See you at the races!
