Consistent Fiorotto leads Cape winners Khan, da Luz
There’s basically nothing in it as the Rookie Cup rejoins the National Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola for its second round on Volkswagen home ground at the Aldo Scribante racetrack at Gqeberha on Saturday 10 May. Sophomore Uzair Khan splits newcomers Giovanni Fiorotto and Mauro da Luz on the log. Just six points split the top five drivers as Volkswagen’s young guns duke it out for the prize of an Astron Energy Polo Cup drive in 2026.
A Volkswagen Motorsport initiative open to young racing drivers between 14 and 16 years old who hold a valid MSA licence, the Rookie Cup is a designed to deliver a seamless transition for that all-important step up to main circuit racing. Rookie Cup works as an academy of motor racing. It goes far beyond best racing lines, perfect brake markers and racecraft as recruits are trained in every aspect of racing with an eye to a career on track.
“The 2025 Volkswagen Cup Rookies raised the bar in their first race, so we look forward to round 2 just down the road from Volkswagen Plant Kariga and Volkswagen Motorsport head office with great interest,” Volkswagen Head of Motorsport Mike Rowe explains. “The opening meeting delivered racing out of the top drawer as the top five drove out of their racing boots in a race to remember. So we simply cannot wait to see what Saturday, and the rest of the season holds.”
Second in both races at Killarney, Richards Bay hot rod graduate Giovanni Fiorotto leads the log by a single point over Rookie Cup second year racer, former karter Uzair Khan, who won the opening race in the Cape. Killarney race 2 winner, karting rookie Mauro Da Luz sits third from Gauteng VW Challenge exponent Christopher Tait and former karter Luke Hill in fifth.
Another second season rookie and former karter, Josh Moore is also close behind in sixth ahead of young lady racer Berlin Robinson, and a name from the Rally Raid world, Luke Corbett.
The Volkswagen Rookie Cup will race alongside South Africa’s premier circuit racing tour on the National Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola at Aldo Scribante on Saturday.
