Swart, Groenewald take GTi enduro

Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart ended his Burly Pro GTi Challenge season in style as he clinched second in the Class A championship by winning the season-ending double-points one-hour endurance race. Swart moved into the lead early on to stamp authority on the field in his Alpine Autohaus Polo 6R Cup, before handing the car over to the multi-talented Zack Groenewald to cruise to the finish.

“That’s the way to end the racing season,” Umpie grinned as he savoured the post race champagne. “It wasn’t easy though — I qualified on pole for the opening sprint race, but my clutch packed up and I chose to park it rather than risk the gearbox. “The GAP Motorsport guys swapped the clutch between races and we were ready for the enduro. “That race counts for double points and I had to share the car with a driver who did not score points this season, so we called on Zack for that honour.

“I had a good fight to the front once it went green after and early virtual safety car period to clean up a crash, but I managed to get ahead and open a gap and Zack was still well ahead after the driver changes and he just stroked it home — well driven uncle! “We had a pretty good season after all — I ended second in Class A in Challenge despite missing a few races to other commitments and we also won a race en route to fourth in the national Polo Cup championship.

“Special thanks to my dad, Gozzi and the guys at GAP Motorsport, Zak and everyone who made it possible. “Now for an even bigger and better 2020 — bring it on!”
