Red Star Regional Extreme Festival stirs up the title chases
It was a case of certain drivers taking charge, while other championships emerged far closer fought following an entertaining day of racing as the various Dunlop-shod Gauteng Northern Regions Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola championships, thoroughly entertained at the Red Star Raceway near Delmas on Saturday 28 June.
“Red Star delivered another great Northern Regions Extreme Festival that once again sharpened up most of the championship tables,” Dunlop Tyres Marketing Manager Joanne de Freitas explained. “We also need to salute the various ATS Pole Position winners, Jayden Goosen in ATE VW Challenge, Bob Neill in BMW M Performance Parts classes A, B and C, and Sheldon Chetty in D, E and F, Terry Wilford in Dunlop V8 Supercars and Gert van den Berg in DOE Formula Vee. And salute all our regional track heroes on delivering yet another sizzling regional race weekend!”
The ATE VW Challenge table continued to tighten up between the top three. Class B veteran Stuart Mack sits second overall despite remaining unbeaten this year. Thanks to his having fewer than the required number of rivals to score maximum points in the middle class. So Class C young gun Adriaan de Beer still leads the way from Mack, but his major problem is less Stuart .than Class C rival Bryce Pilay. Bryce missed the opening race but he closed in on Adriaan with a double win on Saturday. Another two full championship quota Class C men, Mitch Coetzee and Stuart Konig sit ready to pick up any pieces in fourth and fifth ahead of the Class A battle. Young gun Jayden Goosen now has veteran Wayne Masters looming large there following his Red Star double win as Wayne fights back after missing a round.
Red-Star was however significant for Thomas Reib the Dunlop V8 Supercars chase after title rival Warren Lombard suffered a second race retirement. A win and a second for Reib now sees him 31 points clear in the chase. Auke Compaan sits a distant third with Saturday’s opening race winner Larry Wilford now closing in fast in fourth, with Steve Herbst and Wayne Spicer next up.
Moving on to the Dunlop-shod DOE Formula Vee single seaters, Lendl Jansen took his tally up to five wins on the trot, and six in seven races to extend his 2025 title advantage to over 30 points. The duelling Gert van den Berg took a couple of points out of Vaughn Hills in second however, with old man Peter Hills and Shaun van der Linde the big movers on the log. They disposed MD Bester from fourth ahead of Brandon Hills and Theodore Vermaak.
The BMW M Performance Parts Series championship standings remain provisional since the series is yet to officially update its points, but it was a tough weekend for Leon Loubser and Fabio Fedetto after both failed to score while Bob Neill fought back and Elwyn Steenkamp staked his claim with shared Class A honours. Renier Smith consolidated his class B advantage with equal points to Anton Pommersheim and Andreas Meier on Saturday, while second behind debut winner Ethan Coetzee saw Salvi Gualtieri extend his Class C advantage.
In the smaller BMW classes, Bernard De Gouveia likewise came home a solid second behind Andre van Vuuren on the day to retain his D advantage. Karabo Malemela benefited difficult days for his Class E title rivals Wessel Mostert and Eddie Rodrigues’ tough weekends to grab the advantage there. And Zaheer Seedat took a dominant double win over Henry Platt to gain on absent Class F title rivals Shaun Dodd and Justin Brown at Red Star.
There’s a double-whammy coming up for Border motorsport fans as Dunlop Motorsport now prepares for the fifth round of the National chase at East London on Saturday 19 Jul. Before the Regional classes pack for their away race weekend, also at the East London Grand Prix Circuit following their winter break on 23 August.
