It’s a game of cat and mouse in the ATE VW Challenge
The ATE Brakes VW Challenge returns to Red Star Raceway for the fourth round of its 2025 championship at the midwinter Regional Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola on Saturday 28 June. The championship is however proving something of a conundrum. While dominant Class B man Stuart Mack remains unbeaten in the three outings so far this season, it is Class C young gun Adriaan de Beer who leads the way.
How’s that possible, you may ask? Well, the championship requires a field of eight or more cars to start in a class, in order for the winner to score maximum points. Class B has had less than eight cars in most races so far, so while Stuart may be unbeaten, Mr. Mack has so far been powerless to prevent his more prolific C rivals from out-scoring him.
So Adriaan de Beer leads the chase overall from Stuart Mack, Class C trio Mitch Coetzee, Bryce Pillay and Stuart Konig, and Class A leader Jayden Goosen. Who has similarly suffered racing against less than seven class rivals, to not score maximum points in several races so far this season. ATE Brakes VW Challenge is however class-based, so none of that really matters. But then everyone wants to be overall champion.
Boring down into the classes, the big Class A needle match is back between teen rookie Jayden Goosen’s Ferro Energia AA Certified Polo 6R and veteran Wayne Masters, who returns to action after missing the previous race in his Performance Masters Polo. Both have the ever-improving former C champion Ian Walker’s Mellow Veio car to contend with and never ignore ATE Brakes lady charger Elna Croeser, Norbrake lad Dean Ross, Sizani racer Judd Bertholdt and PABAR man Mike Barbaglia snapping at their heels.
Stuart Mack remains unbeaten in Class B in his Autozone Tour Plan Polo 1.0 turbo and has also scored every pole position and fastest lap bonus point too. Behind him, former Superhatch star Francis Aldrich leads the 2-litre gang in his Vaporworx car ahead of Chris Davison’s Generator Services machine, ever more impressive lady racer Nicole Lombard’s PSA Africa Polo, MLP driver Martin de Beer, Rookie Cup racer Josh Moore, Mweza Trans regular Dewald Theron and Historics emigrant Jonathan Konig’s Northern Bolt & Tool entry.
Adriaan de Beer of course also leads the Class C Brat Pack title chase in his Ukwazi Vivo from ECR man Mitch Coetzee and Polo Cup double taker Bryce Pillay. Stuart Konig has made a successful step across from historic racing in his Northern Bolt version ahead of the Zapheriou brothers, Dimitri, and comeback king Michael sandwiching Philip Croeser’s ATE machine in sixth. Don’t ignore Dino Smit, Kyle and Cody Petersen, Justin Gower or, Nolan and Nathan Schoeman either.
The ATE Brakes VW Challenge races in the action-packed Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola on Saturday 28 June at the Red Star Raceway. That’s just off the N12 freeway heading east near Delmas. See you there!
