Aldo’s inter-province races entertain

The Aldo Scribante Race Track entertained Port Elizabeth’s racing faithful to a great day's motor racing on Saturday as an East London visiting party added spice to the usual local attraction at the fifth round EP regional championship meeting, but the locals in general held sway over that impressive incursion. The racing also delivered one or two surprise results, not least of all among the combined PE and Border Modified Saloon Car races, which not only provided some great inter-province action, but proved a race of attrition too...

Bryn High made notice of his intentions by putting his Audi S5 between Scribante brothers, pole man Aldo and Silvio up front in qualifying, while Quinsley Sale’s Nissan 350Z topped Class B ahead of Gordon Nolan’s Polo Turbo and the returning Ian Riddle (BMW). East London visitor Dean Ball meanwhile took the Class C pole in his BMW ahead of PE driver Marais Ellis’ BMW and Julian Herman (Polo).

Class D saw East London’s Richard Clark put one over local hero Stephan Aucamp’s BMW, while PE lad Daniel Bright beat East London visitor Bevan Choudree’s Polo and another local man Wickus Basson to the Class E pole and motorcycle convert Zante Otto (Polo) made a sensational entry into class F with pole position over Theo Scholtz (Polo) and East London Marais trio Jeandre, Cherne and Melindre.

Aldo Scribante trotted off to the opening race win over High and Duncan Lethbridge (Audi TT) while Riddle diced Sale en route to Class B honours with East London visitor Dean Ball breaking up to third in B from Nolan. Anthony Bridgett took a narrow Class C win over Johan Nel with Marais Ellis next up, all of them driving BMWs ahead of Border interloper Dr. Bevan Choudree’s Polo breaking up to end fourth, while Aucamp held Clark off to take Class D. In Class E, Bright beat Basson, Jeandre Marais (Lotus 7) who broke up and Cameron Hall as Scholtz took Class F from Cherne Marais (Golf) and Otto.

Race 2 was restarted after an early red flag to pluck Scribante's Audi out of the ruin of the circuit named after his grandfather's wall, as High led Lethbridge home after Scribante failed to restart. Thys Geyser (Golf) took Class B from Sale, Nolan and Ball; Nel beat Ellis and Bridgett to C honours and Aucamp held Clark off again in Class D. Bright beat Basson and Derik Gouws to Class E and Charne Marais beat Otto and Melindre Marias (Monza) to an all-girl Class F podium.

The remaining Class A cars failed early in the final race to see Quinsey Sale drive his Nissan home to take the race win and the day ahead of Nolan and visitor Ball as Nel took Class C from Bridgett and Ellis and Aucamp took D from Clark. Gouws took the final Class E win from overall winner Basson, Dr. Choudree and Jeandre Marais after Bright hit trouble and Zante Otto took Class F for a debut overall class win over Scholtz and Riaan van Huysteen (Golf), although Melandre Maris took third for the day.

In Sports & GT action, Gordon Nicholson drove his Nissan GT-R to all three race wins ahead of East London visitor Gary Marais (Nardini), Kean Barnard (Lotus 7) and Border Marais quartet Troy (Nardini), Cherne, Melindre and Jeandre all three driving Lotus 7s. Barnard beat Gary, Cherne, Jeandre and Melindre Marais in race 2, with the same result in the final and overall.

Shaun Rudolph took the opening AMSC Coastal Challenge & Historic race win in his Escort ahead of Darryn Vice (Anglia), Rane Berry, Joel Steenekamp (Kadett), Gordon Bennett (Rekord), Mark Schulpfort (Alfa Romeo) and Larry Davies (Alfasud) with the same top two ahead of Steenekamp, Bennett and Schulpfort in race 2. Vice took the final from Berry, Bennett, Davies, Andrew Greenland (Alfasud) and Rudolph, with Vice taking overall honours from Rudolph and Bennett.

On two wheels, Jaco Scholtz (Suzuki 650) beat Ivor Vermaak (Yamaha R6) and historics trio Johan Anker (Yamaha), Remi van Der Berg, Glen Elliott (Suzuki), Oliver McKay (Kawasaki 400) and Historics man Malcolm Burrows (Suzuki) to race 1 honours. Unlimited rider Roberto Jonker (BMW) took race 2 from Vermaak, Scholtz van der Berg, Anker, Burrows, McKay and Elliott, with the same top 5 in the final ahead of Elliott, Burrows and McKay as Vermaak took the day from Scholtz and van der Berg.

Always entertaining, the Street & Fine Car handicap races saw Corne Botes (Ballade) take the opening race from Tertius Wium (BMW), Tom Hugo (350Z), BMW men Francois Wium and Shaun Benn and Justin Seale (350Z) before Rob Venter (Conquest) took race 2 from Hugo, Botes, Francois and Tertius Wium and Benn. Botes then did the double in the final ahead of, Tertius Wium, Venter, Hugo, Benn and Stuart Cornforth (Mini) to see Botes win the day from Tertius Wium and Hugo.

Aldo Scribante plays host to the next EP regional race meeting on 17 August, while the Border racers return to the East London Grand Prix Circuit for their sixth round races two weeks earlier.
