Racing season closes in style at Pretoria climb
The rain held off just long enough for Saturday’s Zwartkops Top of the Hill climb to thrill with great action, spills, and fun as the South African racing season came to a close on Saturday.
At the end of the day, Robert Wolk was quickest of all as he took Single Seater honours in his Pilbeam, Regard Roets’ monster Nissan GT-R took the Modified Production Car win and Ian Schofield the Classic Conqueror in his March. Willie de Beer’s Porsche 911 Turbo was best Road Car. Mauro da Luz and Nicky Netshifhefhe took the Volkswagen Rookie Cup Media Challenge.
The power and the glory of the Modified Production Car Shootout may have wowed the crowd as monster Nissan GT-R duo Reghard Roets and Franco Scribante ruled the roost. But the nimbleness and agility of the Volkswagen SupaPolo impressed too, as Jonathan Mogotsi and Bradley Liebenberg’s Volkswagen were a most impressive third and fourth ahead of Charles Fowlds in their Subaru WRX.
Fastest man on the day Robert Wolk stormed to Single Seater Shootout victory in his Pilbeam Buick ahead of JM Gerber and Josef Kotze. Another single seater, Ian Schofield’s March 77B raced to Classic Conqueror honours from James Temple’s Daytona Cobra, Jonathan du Toit’s Opel Astra V8, and Alistair Simpson in his Camaro.
Willie de Beer took just over a minute to clinch the Road Car Shootout in his Porsche 911 Turbo from Vic Campher’s Porsche 911 GT3, Strati Yiannakis in a BMW M4, Jared Rossouw’s Porsche 911 GT3, Alan Poulter and Anton Pommersheim’s Shelby Mustang.
And While Luke Hill was quickest up the hill, it was the team of Mauro da Luz and Nicky Netshifhefhe who took the Volkswagen Rookie Cup Media Challenge from Chris Tait and Jeanette Kritzinger, Uzair Khan and Mpho Maboi and Hill and Chad Jones.
Overall, Single Seater winner Robert Wolk set the fastest time of the day at 48.530 seconds in his Pilbeam ahead of Modified Saloon winner Reghard Roets’ Nissan GT-R at 52.200. Third fastest Pieter Zeelie did not make the finals after crashing his Toyota MR2 in the heats, leaving Scribante trio, Franco’s GT-R fourth from Audi duo Silvio and Aldo.
Single seater pilot JM Gerber, Jonathan Mogotsi’s SupaPolo, Classic winner Ian Schofield’s March and Bradley Liebenberg’s SupaPolo closed off the top ten overall. That ends Zwartkops’ 2025 season. It all starts all over again with another Pretoria classic, the 25th edition Passion For Speed on the last weekend of January 2026. See you there!
