A special South African Champion moment at Festival
The book South African Champion will salute a very special moment with the Franschhoek Classic Car Festival celebrating 75 years of Formula 1 this weekend. Saturday 4 October is slso 50 years to the day since the final ever South African Championship Formula 1 race.
“A major part of the South Africa Champion book is that we raced our own Formula 1 series here from about 1960 to 1975,” author and Franschhoek local Michele Lupini explains. “It just happens that the Franschhoek Car Festival will mark 50 years to the day of the final South African Champion Formula 1 race on 4 October 1975.
“That makes 4 October 2025 a most significant anniversary in Formula 1, South African and motorsport history. And the ideal opportunity to celebrate it. South African Champion will be at the Franschhoek Car Festival this weekend, where we will show the book, talk on the history and also make another important book announcement.”
The South African Champion tent will be at the Festival display at the Huguenot Monument on Saturday 4 October, and again at the Franschhoek Motor Museum on Sunday. The Tyrrell 007 that Ian Scheckter won that final 1975 race with, but lost the title to Dave Charlton’s McLaren M23, will also be on display at the Museum. Albeit in the colours brother Jody raced the car in ’74.
Copies of the South African Champion book, as well as artwork from the book will be on display at the Festival, where all will also be available for sale. Learn more about the book at southafricanchampion.com
