Can Karodia stave off Atkinson’s Polo Cup charge?
The Astron Energy Polo Cup title chase was thrown on its head last time out at Zwartkops, leaving the championship wide open heading into the coming weekend’s East London Grand Prix Circuit Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola. Johannesburg driver Rory Atkinson absolutely dominated in Pretoria, while Mohammed Karodia retired from a heat to see Industry Petroleum lad Atkinson slash Fast 5 Motorsport LTR racer Karodia’s advantage down to just six points. So it’s all to do in ‘Slummies’ on Saturday.
Karodia and Atkinson now find themselves in a title fight on top of the log, but not yet completely safe from an attack from the rear. Dainfern Dental doctor Hannes Scheepers sits 26 points adrift and ready to strike. Scheepers sits three points clear of Ethan Coetzee’s ECR LTR Polo looking for a return to form, tied in fourth with Rookie Cup champion Judd Berthold, who has increasingly impressed as the season has progressed. Like Scheepers, Bertholdt is among the drivers chasing a breakthrough maiden Astron Energy Polo Cup race victory in East London.
Behind them, AF Fans lass Tyler Robinson is looking to put her rollercoaster Zwartkops weekend behind her, tied in sixth with another top rookie, Durban Dubcorp driver Shrien Rajpaul. There’s another tie in eighth between Sabertek veteran Charl Smalberger, who’s keen to put a trying season behind him with a strong result in East London, and Team Red driver Roshaan Goodman. Production X Rookie Cup graduate Dhivyen Naidoo closes off the Astron Energy Polo Cup top ten.
KM lady racer Lonika Maartens follows in eleventh after another trying season, ahead of Insurisk newcomer Anthony Lessing, Kyle Visser’s Charl Engineering car, Bevin Masters’ CPS Warehouse Polo and Kyalami Exhausts lad Nirav Singh. Team Red rookie Milan Emslie, FSS International entry Pierluigi Muzzulini and Bjorn Bertholdt’s Sizanani Plastics car round off the Cup championship chase. And just in case all that's not enough, the name multiple champion Bradley Liebenberg popped up on the entry list late last week...
Performance Master elder brother Wayne Masters remains in full control of Astron Energy Polo Masters. He still has old rival John Kruger’s Habot Lubricants Polo and the ever consistent Derick Smalberger close enough to be of concern. Consistently improving, Mike Barbaglia is now becoming a threat in his PABAR machine ahead of Norbrake man Gavin Ross, Elio Muzzulini’s FSS International car, Roberto Franco’s Graphix Supply Polo, and newcomer, Uncle George Smalberger’s Shield entry.
Astron Energy Polo Cup races as part of a full and exciting Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola race program on Saturday 19 July. The meeting will also be streamed live via Volkswagen Motorsport and Extreme Festival social media, unless of course you happen to be in East London, which means it’s a case of see you there!
