Campos wins opening race in crunching Touring Cars

Aldo Scribante proved a bittersweet weekend for Chemical Logistics Racing in the third round South African Touring Cars races on Saturday. Touring Cars rookie Keegan Campos’ BMW took the opening race win off pole position with Jagger Robertson and Julian van der Watt’s Volkswagens third and fifth, before Campos ended a close third with Andrew Schofield’s BMW fifth ahead of Siyabonga Mankonkwana and Robertson in a crunching reverse grid second heat.

“Aldo Scribante is a short and tight circuit, so add a reverse grid race and we’re sure of explosive action!” team principal Ian Schofield points out. “It was a crunching second race, but we won the double points first heat with Keegan, who ended second for the day. Jagger, and Julian, Andy and Siya had adventurous outings. That’s racing. Onwards and upwards team!”

Keegan Campos was in complete control of his second South African Touring Cars outing until he took the flag to win the first heat aboard his Campos Transport FAST Racing BMW 328tc. “The first race was awesome with a lights to flag win of pole position,” 2024 SATC SupaCup runner-up Campos points out. “The second race was a far tougher car-bashing affair so I’m pretty happy to have taken the flag in a very close third. Let’s see if it stays that way once the stewards are all said and done!”

Jagger Robertson was relieved with fourth overall after a technically challenging and crunching weekend aboard his Chemical Logistics Sparco WCT Volkswagen Golf GTI. “We had engine trouble in qualifying, so started well back in seventh,” Investchem Formula 1600 champion Jagger explains. “So to climb to fifth in the first heat was a good run. The second race was mad and I was off by turn 2 and had to fight back to seventh. That’s racing I suppose, but we head to my home track at Zwartkops next. Can’t wait!”

Second on the grid, Julian van der Watt ended third in the opening race aboard his Chemical Logistics Sparco WCT Volkswagen Golf GTI and was running third again in the second. “I took a bump from behind and I was off with pieces of Golf all over the show,” Julian rued. “I managed to limp home at the back but that was a double podium out the window. 2025 has not been the kindest of seasons yet.”

FlySafair Chemical Logistics FAST BMW 328tc teammate Andrew Schofield has also had more than his fair share of drama in 2025. “We had reasonable pace this weekend but problems struck once again in the opening heat,” Andy frowned. “Heat 2 was wild but I kept out of trouble and brought it home fifth. An up and down weekend overall.”

Formula 1600 graduate Siyabonga Mankonkwana hit trouble with a flat tyre in heat 1 but was far happier in race 2 in the Investchem FAST Toyota Corolla: “I retired from race 1, but I really enjoyed the second,” Siya explained. “Aldo was bittersweet but I was on the pace and mixed it up with the guys. Now all I want is a hell of a lot more of that!”
