Unknown upcountry kart kid disrupts Killarney

Besides the few kids in his class at national level, not many at the Killarney Kart track had ever heard of Ghazi Motlekar before Saturday’s under-13 Mini Max qualifying. But when Motlekar popped up on pole position, that all changed, before the Dainfern, Johannesburg kid went on to deliver his first ever kart win too, en route to second overall for the day.

“We went to Cape Town to learn and prepare for the 2020 season,” Ghazi explained. “But the weekend stepped up a rung or two when I found myself on my first ever pole position at Killarney on Saturday! “That was a problem in a way as I do not score points in the Cape championship and I did not want to get in the way of Reese Koorzen and Jason Macbeath’s close title fight, so it was important to keep it clean.

“The first heat was the race of my life — the top three or four of us were not more than a couple of tenths apart for the entire race, we had an incredible dice and I managed to pip Jason at the post. “We were all very worried when we were called up to the Clerk of the Course’s office thinking we had done something wrong, but uncle Kevin De Wit only wanted to congratulate us on our superb race — he has never seen such competitive driving and thanked us and then we were all so happy!

“The second and third races went very well too and our close fight went on — I was third and second in those two and ended up second for the day. Congratulations to Jason on winning the day and Reese for winning the Cape Mini Max championship and thanks also to Paul Malcolm, Mischa Williams, Valentino Hoffman and Ethan Deacon for the chance to race with you all at Killarney. “Special thanks also to uncle Hughie Orr for engineering me to my first ever karting pole position and race win at Killarney — now we really can't wait for 2020!"
