Giordano’s wild weekend ends in tears

Saturday proved a wild weekend of contrasts for WP Burly Pro GTi Challenge championship leader Giordano Lupini at Killarney. Class C racer Lupini inherited pole position, set a new Class C lap record en route to a hard fought first race victory, his ninth in 11 races and consolidated his class and overall title leads, but the second race had other plans for the young B Com freshman and entrepreneur.

“The first race was a perfect ten,” Giordano explained. “I took full points for pole position, fastest lap of the day with a new lap record and the race win. “I had to work for it though as Kyle Wiltshire was really on form today, but my La Vie de Luc/ CiR Construction/ Accelerate Special Gasoline Golf GTi racing with Umpini Motors was really strong, but well within limits in the post race dyno check too, so special thanks to Gozzi from GAP Motorsport, my dad and the team for all the effort as always.

The second race however once again turned Giordano’s season on its head. “There was a little argy-bargy in Turn 5 on lap 2 and I nudged the second placed Class B car that was between the leading C car and me and I felt something odd through Turn 4 the following lap. “So when I got to Turn 5, my foot went to the floor…

"I had no brakes and I was a passenger at 180km/h! “I just closed my eyes and assumed the brace position — when it was all over, I was sitting upside-down on top of the tyre wall and scrambled out of the boot with the assistance of the WPMC marshals. “The car is pretty bent — it seems that contact the lap before damaged the left front hub, which let go and when that happens, you simply have no brakes and the rest is history.

“Special thanks to the marshals, the medics and everyone else who has contacted us concerned, but I am 100% fine and ready to get back in and fight for the title. “Now the challenge is to be ready for the next race in four weeks time — the car is off to carSave at acciDent Guru, so the plan is to be out and testing in the week before the race — I am still provisionally a point ahead in the overall title chase and our class lead is pretty solid, so it’s all to do — bring it on!”
