World Final knowhow counts in wet

Luca Munaretto thrived in the wet conditions of the Vereeniging Northern Regions karting finals on Saturday as the Boksburg youngster used his recent Rotax Max World Finals experience to his best advantage. “I was delighted when I woke up Saturday morning and it was poring with rain,” the CBC grade 9 scholar explained. “It meant that I could apply so much of what we learned in Italy to my own kart and at my home track.”

Munaretto, who scored a fine pole position, a fourth and a second place in the heats of the Rotax Max DD2 World Final before being taken out of his pre-final by an out of control competitor from behind, did just that as he quickly tweaked his kart to go fastest by 0.7 seconds in Saturday's free practice before putting it on pole position for race 1.

Luca then diced with the highly experienced Justin Allison for the first laps before getting ahead and settling down to lead his rival home in spite of great pressure and his racing in the quickest DD2 gearbox class at the minimum age of 14 and being up against significantly older and more experienced drivers like Allison.

Munaretto and Allison initially diced again in the second race, but Allson moved ahead and stayed there, but the two tussled throughout the third heat, only for the more experienced man to pip young Munaretto at the post. “That was a brilliant day’s racing — thanks to Justin for a great dice and three brilliant races,” Luca concluded.

“Pole, a race win, fastest lap and second overall was a great innings — thanks to my dad, my team and everyone who has made this year possible. “Now we are ready for 2017 — bring it on!”
