Leaders van der Watt & Loosemore win at Scribante
South African Touring Cars championship leader Julian van der Watt and SATC SupaCup frontrunner Jason Loosemore tightened their respective grips on their respective class titles with victory at Aldo Scribante’s fifth round Extreme Festival races in Gqeberha on Saturday. Van der Watt took pole position and the double points opening race win before rookie Jason Coetzee won the reverse grid second heat. Loosemore meantime scored a grand slam to place one hand on this year’s SupaCup title.
Julian van der Watt started his weekend on the front foot by putting his We Buy Cars Investchem WCT Volkswagen Golf GTI on pole position alongside Robert Wolk’s Chemical Logistics WCT Golf GTI. Keegan Campos lined up third in his Veloce Campos Transport Chemical Logistics FAST BMW 128ti next to KC Ensor-Smith’s African Heating Investchem WCT Golf GTI with Gazoo Racing Toyota Corolla duo, rookie Jason Coetzee, and reigning champion Michael van Rooyen next up from Andrew Schofield’s Fly Safair Chemical Logistics FAST BMW.
Jason Loosemore likewise made the all-Volkswagen SupaPolo SupaCup pole his own in his Security Fencing & Alarms Nathans version ahead of Niko Zafiris’ AZNetworks LTR car and Volkswagen Motorsport’s reigning Astron Energy Polo Cup champion Rory Atkinson. Union Power Energy lad Judd Bertholdt followed from Combined Racing FAST brothers Paulo and Rick Loureiro, OMG & Gadgets driver Jared Rossouw, and newcomer Branden Dean’s Syspont machine.
Julian van der Watt led Keegan Campos, KC Ensor-Smit, Robert Wolk, Michael van Rooyen, Jason Coetzee and Andrew Schofield home in a processional opening race. Wolk was however later placed behind Coetzee for Robert’s part in Jason’s slip to the back. It was much the same in SupaCup as Jason Loosemore led Niko Zafiris, Rory Atkinson, and Judd Bertholdt home, although Paulo Loureio, Jared Rossouw and Brandon Dean all found their way past Rick Loureiro.
Starting on the reverse grid second race pole, Jason Coetzee repeated his previous Aldo Scribante meeting lights to flag win under pressure from Keegan Campos, who put one on Robert Wolk for second at mid-distance. KC Ensor-Smith and Julian van der Watt both found a way past Michael van Rooyen early on. But the reigning champion made a lap seven move on both of them to claim fourth back ahead of Julian and KC after
Andrew Schofield retired.
Jason Loosemore had little trouble in keeping Rory Atkinson and Niko Zafiris at bay in another orderly SupaCup race as Judd Bertholdt, Paulo Loureio, Jared Rossouw, Rick Loureio and Brandon Dean followed them home. All of which leaves Julian van der Watt in an increased South African Touring Cars lead, and Jason Loosemore in control of the SATC SupaCup title chase with four races still to run starting with two at Killarney’s penultimate round in Cape Town on Saturday 19 September.
