Nathan's SupaPolo, Atkinson's Golf GTI take hillclimb wins
Volkswagen Motorsport enjoyed a perfect weekend at the Knysna Simola Hillclimb with all its cars finishing in optimum position. Veteran Graeme Nathan pedalled his Volkswagen Polo SupaCup racer to yet another class B2 victory, while Rory Atkinson and Matt Merton delivered a splendid Volkswagen Golf GTI 8.5 one-two in the standard class A1.
“We enjoyed yet another great weekend at the 2026 Simola Hillclimb,” Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport confirmed. “Volkswagen Motorsport attacked the hill with a three-car team headed by veteran Graeme Nathan in our SupaCup hill climber, while Rory Atkinson and Matt Merton represented us in a pair of standard new Golf GTI 8.5s.
“Former multiple class T production Car and Volkswagen Polo Cup champion Graeme blew away the cobwebs in impressive style with a dominant class win to maintain the SupaPolo’s unbeaten record up the hill. Our current Volkswagen Motorsport SupaCup driver and Astron Energy Polo Cup champion Rory Atkinson and Matt Merton backed that up by welcoming the new Volkswagen Golf GTI 8.5 to market in winning style when they dominated the standard production class A1.”
“Overall, the Simola Hillclimb was once again one to remember for Volkswagen Motorsport and everyone else. We enjoyed mingling with and spoiling our fans with some great giveaways, cool offerings from the Volkswagen Motorsport merchandise shop, while we also discovered factory driver Jonathan Mogotsi’s hidden talent behind the mic!” Rowe concluded. Best of all, our Volkswagen factory cars and drivers once again tasted that Simola hillclimb glory.
