Slippery conditions deliver Cape Rotax karting surprises
A damp start and slippery conditions served to brighten up an enjoyable day of Western Cape regional Rotax Max karting at a grey Killarney on Saturday. Multiple winners in several classes and some strong family performances added to a fine day at the races in spite of the conditions.
It was a very good day for the Wadeley brothers, when eldest Matthew won the final heat to come out on top of a close three-winner premier class gearbox DD2 fight from opening heat winner Joseph Oelz and Storm Lanfear, who took race 2. Ethan Stier
held Rafe Tayler, Tony Auby, and Nikita Thieme off for fourth. It was also a good day for the Jordan brothers in DD2 Masters as triple winner Jared won from Michael, Conor Hughes, and Neville Chapman.
Younger brother Jordon Wadeley took open class Senior Max with a comfortable two race to one victory over Sebastiano Human, with Geo Christi, Matthew Carter, Jesse Swart, Keagan Beaumont, and Jude Stuart in chase. High school Junior Max also brought shared honours as Aiden Beaumont won the first two races before Max Boshoff took the third, with Michael Danks, Justin Milleskie, Zion Hair, and Zach McAuley next home.
In primary school action, Liam Wharton bounced back to win races 2 and 3 to steal the under-13 Mini Max day from consistent Michael O'Mahoney, heat 1 winner Ruhan Victor, Logan Roehrig, Jayden van der Merwe and Zac Boshoff. Slater Smith beat Radhi Harris two to one for the under-11 Micro Max win from Caleb Lingeveldt, Juan Stander, Aleena Doutie and Jamie Geldenhuys. And Zaid Panday dominated baby Bambino from Zeeva Strydom, Blake van Deventer, Sebastian Fletcher, and Remi Coxon.
With the coming weekend’s second round iDube, KZN Rotax Max National cancelled and replaced by a what will now be round 3 at Zwartkops on 4 July, the Formula K round at Benoni on 13 June becomes round 2. Before that however, the third round of both the Cape and Gauteng regional championships happen on the same day, at Killarney and Formula K on Saturday 16 May.
