SA Touring Cars and SupaCup march on Pretoria
The South African Touring Cars and SupaCup hit their midseason at what should be a seismic weekend of racing at the fourth round of the Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola at Zwartkops in Pretoria on Saturday 21 June.
The chase is certainly on with the South African Touring Cars field split between two men defending an advantage gained, racing the full season so far under pressure from two upstarts who missed the first race and have won everything since. It’s another matter altogether in the SATC SupaCup however, where young Capetonian Tate Bishop has stamped authority so far in 2025, leaving the rest with it all to do.
In fact, the South African Touring Cars championship leaders have not even won a race between them so far in 2025. Four second places, a third and a fourth are enough to propel consistent veteran Michael van Rooyen into a handy championship lead heading to his home race in his SVR Steelworks Gazoo Toyota Corolla. Rest assured, Michael is fully intent to add that missing victory to his season cart at Zwartkops.
Rookie Investchem Formula 1600 champion Jagger Robertson has also delivered consistent results with a second and three third place finishes in his Chemical Logistics Sparco WCT Volkswagen Golf GTI. His problem, however, sits right behind him in the chase as late starter Keegan Campos closes in fast, with two wins in the four races he has started aboard his Chemical Logistics FAST Racing BMW 128tc.
It’s a similar scenario for fourth in the chase, where double winner in his four starts, Gazoo Toyota Corolla lad Saood Variawa has shot up to sit on even points with Julian van der Watt, who has endured a troubled start to his season in the second Chemical Logistics Golf GTI. Behind them sits Andrew Schofield’s improving pace which has been slowed by bad luck in the FlySafair Chemical Logistics FAST BMW 128tc. He’s tussling with Toyota Corolla late starters, Gazoo Racing lad Nathi Msimanga and rookie Siyabonga Mankonkwana’s Chemical Logistics FAST version.
Moving over to the SATC SupaCup, it seems Cape kid Tate Bishop has checked out and buzzed off in his Angri Racing LTR SupaPolo, with five straight race wins to one over champion Jonathan Mogotsi’s Volkswagen Motorsport Genuine Parts version. Mogotsi has a bigger problem in his mirrors where former teammate Charl Visser remains very much a factor in his Charl Engineering SupaCup.
Behind them it’s battle of the rookies with karter Nicolaos Vostanis fourth from Toyota GR86 champion Dawie van der Merwe’s solo Gazoo SupaStarlet and Astron Energy Polo Cup champion Jason Loosemore in the second VW Motorsport. Kalex lass Karah Hill follows with Cash Cat 99 karting prodigy Muhammad Wally closing fast. Zimbabwean Stylin Auto lad Dylan Pragji follows from Graphix Design racer David Franco, Dean Venter’s Platinum Mile car and Masters man Andre Bezuidenhout’s Weltevreden entry.
With practice on Friday, qualifying Saturday morning and two races through the day, the South African Touring Cars and SupaCup will star on a full Zwartkops national race bill. See you at the races or catch them live on streaming via the various Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola social media platforms.
