Close racing, great progress in Gqeberha Rookie Cup

Second season racer Josh Moore and rookie Christopher Tait both took maiden Volkswagen Rookie Cup victories at the series’ home race at the Aldo Scribante racetrack in Gqeberha on Saturday. Racing at the National Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola, the young guns chasing the prize of an Astron Energy Polo Cup drive in 2026, starred on all fronts.

“Today was a particularly pleasing day of Volkswagen Rookie Cup racing,” Volkswagen Head of Motorsport Mike Rowe explained. “We’ve been watching Josh Moore consistently develop as a driver over the past season and a half since he stepped up from karting and his win today yet again proves the worth of this program. It was also a very good day for class rookie Christopher Tait, whose VW Challenge champion experience clearly stands him in great stead. Well done lads! ”

Sophomore duo Uzair Khan and local lad Josh Moore closed off the front row of the grid in qualifying. The rookies, VW Challenge Class C champion Christopher Tait, oval track racer Giovanni Fiorotto, karters Luke Hill, Mauro Da Luz and racing lass Berlin Robinson and Luke Corbett followed.

Josh Moore made his home advantage count to overcome Uzair Khan and take his maiden Volkswagen Rookie Cup victory in the opening heat. Luke Hill, Mauro Da Luz and Christopher Tait followed from Giovanni Fiorotto, who was later relegated to seventh behind Berlin Robinson after some contact between them, with Corbett next.

Christopher Tait then made his move on Uzair Khan count, early in race 2, before he went on to take his maiden Rookie Cup win from Khan, Moore, Da Luz, Luke Corbett and Fiorotto.

A Volkswagen Motorsport initiative open to young racing drivers between 14 and 16 years old who hold a valid MSA licence, the Rookie Cup is designed to deliver a seamless transition for that all-important step up to main circuit racing. Rookie Cup works as an academy of motor racing. It goes far beyond best racing lines, perfect brake markers and racecraft, as recruits are trained in every aspect of racing with an eye to a career on track.
