Alibhai Wraps Brands Weekend Up With Second

The weekend got better and better for South African driver Aqil Alibhai as the second round of the British Michelin Ginetta Junior championship progressed at Brands Hatch in England. Alibhai qualified in seventh before racing to tenth in the opening race on Saturday. He then brought it home sixth in Sunday’s second race, before he found his feet to race to a fine second in the damp finale, to move up to sixth in the championship standings.

“That was a better weekend,” Aqil admitted after struggling in the opening round last month. “I qualified decently, but there was a wild fight in the opening race and I ended up rounding out the top ten. "Race 2 went a bit better —  I started ninth, but soon fought back to sixth and managed to keep it there despite being under huge pressure for the rest of the race.

“I then started the final in my best grid position for the weekend in sixth and the track was damp for that one. “I was happy in those conditions though and quickly made up places to second in ahead of a train of cars behind the leader. "I had a splendid scrap with my Elite Motorsport teammate Will Macintyre from there as we traded second place between us all the way, but I was in the right place at the right time and brought it home to my first podium finish of the season in second.

“The weekend got better as it progressed and I was happy to improve and score my first podium of the year in the Final. “Now I just need to go one better for that first win of the year! “I have also moved up a couple of places to sixth in the championship chase. "We have scored decent points in every race so far, but the focus now has to be on podiums to keep in touch with the championship frontrunners. “We only have a two week break to round 3 at Thruxton — I can’t wait!”
