Troy ready to fly the SA flag in Rotax Grand Finals

Pietermaritzburg karting sensation Troy Snyman wrapped up his second South African Rotax Max championship when he clinched a sensational under-15 high school Junior Max title at Zwartkops in Pretoria on Saturday. That earned Snyman another seat in the South African team at the ‘Olympics of Karting' 2021 Rotax Max Grand Finals in Bahrain from 11-18 December, but not before a mammoth season-long fight to wrest the title.

“Wow, that was a wild and hard-fought championship!” Troy owned up. “I won it by just two points and had to overcome some really tough competition to pull it off. “At the end, I won five national heats, two more than any of my rivals, but some of them were a little more consistent through the season. “So it was touch and go all the way — no holds barred racing and the Final weekend’s four heats were quite mad!"

Troy won two of Saturday’s races on a weekend where most of the high school class drivers also incurred penalties through the cut and thrust nature of the racing. But it was young Snyman who emerged champion at the end of the day to claim that hallowed Grand Final seat as part of the SA national team. “I am so excited to have earned another trip to the Rotax Max grand Finals — I am 100% ready to wear the green and gold and fly the South African flag with pride.

“We came within a couple of corners of winning the Mini Max world title a couple of years ago, but I was helped off the track,” Troy concluded. “So let’s hope I can go all the way this time! “It won’t be easy — I'll probably be racing against those same international rivals, just a few years older now! “Thanks so much to my team and my parents for this brilliant opportunity. “We cannot wait for Bahrain!”
