Second round Cape kart races set to thrill

If the recent opening round 2020 Western Province Rotax Max Challenge was anything to go by, the Cape’s finest karters will no doubt once again deliver another splendid show when round 2 goes down at the Killarney Kart Track Saturday 14 March. Even better is that the meeting is the local contingents' dress rehearsal for the opening national in KZN two weeks later, so fans are guaranteed a splendid day’s racing.

The February meeting delivered multiple winners in several classes including premiere DD2, where Sebastian Boyd, Jason Coetzee and Charl Visser won a heat each. Reigning WP gearbox class champion Dino Stermin will be out to make up for slim pickings last time out and you can expect another thrilling weekend in over-30 DD2 Masters, where Conor Hughes, Roy Gruer and Jason Greyling also shared out wins last time out, but Andre Steenkamp, Jared Jordan and Andrew Thomas among others also want their share of winning.

Polo Cup racer Jason Coetzee looks like the man to beat in Senior Max, but Tate Bishop, SA Senior champion Charl Visser, Kai van Zijl and Formula 1600 driver Andrew Rackstraw will be out to get him. Don’t ignore Storm Lanfear, Reece Oellermann, brothers Michael and Jared Jordan and rookie Tristan Reddy among the gladiators in the Cape’s top chain-driven kart class either.

In the schoolboy classes, Troy Dolinschek and Kyle Visser will be the form lads in under-15 Junior Max, with Andre and Kyle Le Riche, Mikaeel Moolla and Matthew Wadeley out to make their lives as difficult as possible. Jason Macbeath has Reza Levy and Paul Malcolm to deal with in under-13 Mini Max, while Ethan Deacon and Ethan Stier will also be factors there. And Reese Koorzen and Joshua Smit are the kids to beat in under-11 Micro Max where Keagan Beaumont, Dale Hobbs, Jordon Wadeley, Eric Norman, Yusuf Parker and Sabelo Ntuli are out to do just that.

Another bumper grid of baby Bambinos will see Kai van Rensburg start as the firm favourite, but never ignore Aiden Beaumont, Matthew Smit and Rebecca Wadeley, or a growing field of karting rookies including John Norman, Sebastiano Human and Siyabonga Ntuli, Zack McAuley, Liam Wharton, Michael Danks and Riley Stier.

Tightly controlled Rotax Max Challenge karting races with equal chassis running identical engines and tyres to leave the drivers to do the ‘talking’ on track. The series crowns various regional champions as well as South African champions through a four-round national series, of which the winners also earn SA team seats in the ‘Olympics of Karting’ Max Grand Finals in Bahrain in November.

Find the Kart Track on the infield of the Killarney main circuit with good food and refreshments available, informative commentary; a cool atmosphere in the pits and great racing on track - sounds like a fine late summer’s Saturday out.
