New book on South African Formula 1 and Grand Prix history

The new book, South African Champion is now available for international delivery. It covers the entire, epic 125 year story of single-seater motor racing history on the subcontinent.

Starting with the first race in 1900, South African Champion takes readers on a journey through the first Grand Prix era of the ’30s and on to the Championship years. It studies each of 33 South African Championship seasons, every one of the 33 South African, Rand, Cape, and other local Grand Prix over the years, and all the action since then, too.

“South African Champion tracks an incredible history while telling a truly epic racing story as it has never been told before,” author Michele Lupini explains. “We re-live many a forgotten race, recall significant facts and trends and also uncover a number of startling and significant revelations, many of which emerged through the intense research that has gone into creating the book.

“South African Champion is in essence the fruit of a quarter century of work that started as a magazine series, but has now most significantly evolved into a tome of its own. The book records and recalls the century and a quarter of a story that has never been collated in a single publication before. South African Champion is a most important, full and representative timeline of a most significant slice of South African sporting history.”

The luxury quality, limited edition South African Champion is a 304 page 30 by 33 centimetre coffee table book. With the foreword by South Africa’s only Formula 1 World Champion Jody Scheckter, it comprises fifty intensive parts in eight chapters to cover the entire, captivating story. It also includes champion and leading driver profiles, all the relevant data, results, championship logs, along with much more relevant information.

Hundreds of photographs from the various eras are used to illustrate South African Champion. Many have never been published before and several are now colourised. A number of exclusive new artworks also depict many of the most important moments covered. Each copy of South African Champion is individually signed and numbered by the author. Buyers can choose from remaining book numbers on ordering.
