Els & Swartz take rally class win as Jayden plots Polo Cup progress
The weekend’s double header SA National Rally Championship opening Delmas rally proved a great outing for young Jayden Els, who is dovetailing a dual campaign this season aboard his Power Line Africa rally Volkswagen Polo R2 and a national circuit racing attack in his King Price VW Polo Cup.
Driving with Michelle Swartz, SA rally star Etienne Lourens’ daughter reading the notes, 16-year old former world Rotax Mini Max world champion Jayden adopted a cautious approach on Friday’s six-stage rally to com home fifth overall and third in the competitive NRC2 class. Saturday went even better, with the duo in overall contention from the get-go as they powered the Polo to third overall and a fine NRC2 class victory.
“We had a great weekend in Delmas,” Jayden admitted. “I took it easy on Friday as Michelle and I worked on pace and we were happy with third in class. “We opened it up a little on Saturday with second overall on the opening stage and then just settled down to a good pace through the day for a class win and an overall podium. “Thanks so much to the team for a great car and to Michelle for a fine job in the hot seat!
It’s a complete change of focus for Jayden this week as he prepares for Saturday’s second-round Polo Cup races at Zwartkops. “Racing in Polo Cup needs a completely different focus, especially when I'm racing in the cauldron of the midfield as we were at Killarney last time out. "So I was chuffed with seventh down there. “We are on home ground this weekend so let’s hope I can deliver an even better result on track in the King Price Polo!”
