A rookie on the Road to Dakar, Philip continues an epic journey
If ever a competitor typified the true spirit of the Road to Dakar Challenge, it is Philip Botha. Just a few years ago, he arrived in the sport as an absolute novice with zero racing pedigree, yet his latest performance secured him an entry to the world’s toughest motorsport event. Botha’s trajectory is the ultimate story of passion, dedication, patience and progress through the Red-Lined Motorsport racing program.
Botha and navigator Andries ‘Stompie’ Mynhardt scooped the prestigious Road to Dakar Challenge at the weekend’s VAPS HCV Vryheid 400. This latest triumph rewards the Penta Motor Group crew with a free entry to the 2028 Dakar Rally worth an estimated R600,000. It’s also the crowning achievement of a career built on staggering consistency and the team’s ethos that to finish first, one must first finish!
Starting from scratch, Philip learned the rally-raid ropes in an entry-level Red-Lined T1 VK50. With stalwart right-hand man Roelof Janse van Vuren navigating those formative years, they stepped up to the trusty T1 VK56, and today, Philip and Stompie battle at the sharp end of the SA T1+ class in the latest Red-Lined REVO T1+. In the process, Philip has rewritten the consistency record book. He quite remarkably finished each of the first 23 consecutive national races he started from the day of his debut.
“Winning the Road to Dakar is a dream come true, but doing it all the way with Red-Lined has made it even more special,” Philip Botha admits. “From those early days in the VK50 with Roelof and that unbelievable 23-race finishing streak, to learning to compete across the different terrain and now to be fighting for the championship in the REVO T1+ with Stompie, the overall Red-Lined performance and reliability package has been second to none. Red-Lined gave us the tools, the support and the guidance, and now our ticket to Dakar 2028 is booked!”
“Philip has become the poster child for what both Red-Lined and the Road to Dakar are all about,” Red-Lined Group CEO Terence Marsh beamed. “He came to us with no experience and a big dream, bought completely into our philosophy, and methodically worked his way up the ladder from our T1’s into our top-tier REVO T1+ V8. To see Philip and Stompie win the Road to Dakar as well as fight for this year’s national SA T1+ title is hugely rewarding for all of us. It’s living proof that our training and development platform delivers!”
Second in the SA T1+ class at the Vryheid event also keeps Botha and Mynhardt in prime contention for that national title. It now goes down to a straight shootout against Red-Lined teammates Johan and Sean van Staden at the season finale in Thabazimbi next month.
