Midwinter championship midpoint beckons in Delmas

The South African National Investchem Formula 1600 Championship sits poised on a knife’s edge as the Extreme Festival circus heads to Red Star near Delmas for its midseason fourth round on Saturday 2 July.

Just one championship point splits Josh Le Roux and Antwan Geldenhuys at the top of the championship standings. The next four cars are separated by all of six points as brother Gerard Geldenhuys sets out to defend third from Alex Vos, Troy Dolinschek and Nicholas van Weely. There’s even more excitement towards the back, as two former Investchem Formula 1600 champions, GTC stars Julian van der Watt and Andrew Rackstraw make cameo appearances in a pair of Formula Ford Kents.

Josh Le Roux will have a spring in his step as he hops into his Master Stairs Mygale, having not only won three of the six races so far this season, but he has also just returned from a successful sojourn in a British Formula 1600 round. Abacus Divisions Mygale brothers Antwan and Gerard Geldenhuys, and the ever-improving Alex Vos and his DVBS Investchem Mygale have shared out the other wins. Vos also arrives fresh off an English outing.

There’s more than enough competition though, from veterans Nick van Weely’s multicoloured Magnificent Paints & Hardware Van Diemen and Andrew Schofield’s FlySafair Mygale. Add young guns Ewan Holtzhausen’s Total Plastics Mygale, Jason Coetzee in his Mint Wraps Mygale, Siyabonga Mankonkwana’s Investchem Mygale and racing  lass Taya Van Der Laan’s Macrocomm car. Troy Dolinschek will skip Delmas, but both Cape compatriot Storm Lanfear and KZN lad Shrien Naidoo will return to the fray.

Looking  at the Formula Ford Kent field, log leader Ian Schofield is out of the country, but expect van der Watt and Rackstraw to keep the likes of Duncan Vos, Allen Meyer, Graham Hepburn, Ron van Weely, Paul Schultz and Steve Venter on their toes . So, if you’re looking for a really cool midwinter warmer, Investchem Formula 1600 race Red Star Raceway as part of a full July 2 Extreme Festival program. Now that’s something to look forward to. Diarise it now!
