A Fine Day of Karting at Vereeniging

The Vereeniging Kart Track hosted the fourth round of the Gauteng Rotax Max Karting Challenge on Saturday as the threat of afternoon showers stayed away to deliver a fine day of racing on the quick Vaal track.

Niko Zafiris beat Kian Grottis two races to one to take top class DD2 gearbox kart honours for the day, from Marcel de Beer and Dusan Radojevic. Philippe Chapat trotted off a trio of DD2 Veterans wins, helped by second and third placed Frikkie Cornelius and Jonathan Kairuz fighting over the lower podium slots in the hearts. Rob Nicholson was third for the day from Robert Fulton, Derrick Joseph and Johan Kruger.

Moosa Kajee overcame opening race winner Muhammad Wally two wins to one to take the Senior Max day from Olerato Sekudu, Karabo Malemela, Ethan Bostander, Roshaan Goodman and karting comeback kid Tristan Losch. And Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy driver KC Ensor-Smith continued to make high school Junior Max his own over the squabbling Wian Boshoff and Nicolaos Vostanis, Erich Heystek, Jayden Goosen and Ndzalo Khoza.

Strong grids were once again a feature of the primary school classes, where Caleb Odendaal beat Kent Swartz two under-13 Mini Max wins to one with the consistent Aadam Kajee a close third. Amani Kinyua pipped Reagile Spice Mailula and Georgia Lenaerts to fourth. Rafael Da Silva dominated under-11 Micro Max with three race wins over Tayln Patel each time, while Johan Nolte fought Emma Dowling and Rafael De Sousa and Cristian Verheul off for third.

Diego Antunes took the Bambino win with wins in the second and third races ahead of Brodi Dowling, Adriaan Steyn, Luhan De Wet and Callum du Toit after pole kid and race 1 winner Noah Cronje had a rest of the day to forget to end up sixth. The next Gauteng regional is at Formula K on 4 June, but there’s a KZN round at iDube coming Sunday 22 May and a Cape round at Killarney Saturday 28 May. The second round Rotax Max National follows on 25 June.
