National Senior debut wins for Alibhai

Aqil Alibhai is making the best of a challenging karting season. The past weekend was no exception as he scored a double victory in the final two heats of the weekend’s six-heat marathon Zwartkops Rotax Senior Max double header. 14-year old Alibhai had a significant growth spurt through lockdown which forced him to swap classes mid-season. He had become too heavy to come near the Junior weight limit.

After making a successful switch to the more powerful and heavier Senior Max at the last regional races, the Ormonde youngster was immediately competitive. He followed that up with another good run at this weekend’s national, taking a couple of wins on Sunday afternoon to end up a close second overall for the weekend.

“Senior Max is a super-competitive class this year, so it was never going to be easy,” Aqil pointed out. “We never quite had the set-up right on Saturday and I missed the podium in both races. “But we worked it all out overnight and I managed a couple of seconds in the first two heats and then we really hit the sweet spot and I won the last two races.

“That means I won round 3 of the nationals, which Sunday in effect was, so that was another great weekend after all. It also adds to my win in last weekend’s Rok nationals. “We still have our eyes set on adding the Rotax Max World Finals to the Rok Finals where I have already qualified, but let’s see how we get there! “Special thanks to my dad and the team for a great kart again and to Rotax Max for a great weekend.”
