Mark’s Lamborghini avenges Arangies’ Audi at Home

It was a case of sweet revenge as home hero Jonathan du Toit’s Trans Africa Racing Lamborghini Huracan put two over Charl Arangies’ Stradale Into Africa Audi R8 LMS GT3 in Zwartkops' fifth round South African National GT3 G+H Transport Extreme Supercar races on Saturday. Vaal man Arangies had raced his Audi to a double victory over du Toit at Aldo Scribante Port Elizabeth just two weeks before, so all eyes were on the fight up front.

Racing as top billing to Saturday’s Zwartkops third Regional Festival, du Toit was in commanding form from the outset as he put his orange and white Huracan on pole position on Friday afternoon. It was not all plain sailing however, as wildcard Reghard Roets slotted his Nissan GT-R into second on the grid a second adrift, to split title rivals Jonathan and Charl, as Roets looked set to run a little interference in the races.

Ben Morgenrood completed the all Class A+ top four in his wonderful Chevy V8 powered BMG Lexus, while Greg Parton’s Drizit Lamborghini Huracan lined up fifth at the head of a GT3 Balance of Performance trio including Marius Jackson’s MJR Audi R8 LMS GT3 and Ricky Giannoccaro’s G+H Transport Lamborghini Gallardo. Class A leader Deon du Plessis’ BPT KTM XBow would start eighth from rising teenage Class C star Kwanda Mokoena’s Amandla Coal MJR Audi R8 LMS GT4.

GT3 man Mark du Toit’s Trans Africa Ferrari F430 GT3 and Richard Pott’s Porsche 911 GT3 were next up from Class D men, Cape visitor Ammaar Coetzee’s A&M Plumbing BMW M3 and local driver and Uli Sanne’s BMW Z4 M Coupe. Jimmy Giannoccaro’s Class B G+H Transport BMW Z4 M Coupe, another Cape lad, Mansoor Parker’s Jive BMW M3 and Richard Daley rounded off the grid.

If Roets’ aim was to play interference, that’s precisely what he did. Jonathan du Toit led away but Reggie soon had his GT-R ahead and kept the lead for four laps. Until the brittle Nissan’s drivetrain failed again. That left du Toit under pressure from Charl Arangies, but the Audi man slipped up and lost two places on lap 7. He soon made them back to end up 2.4 seconds behind race winner du Toit as Ben Morgenrood came home third in the Lexus.

National GT3 Balance of Performance winner Greg Parton had Marius Jackson all over him early on. But the Audi plummeted down the field at mid distance and dropped further back two laps later, to leave Ricky Giannoccaro to second in GT3 from Mark du Toit. Class A winner Deon du Plessis’ KTM followed from the ever-impressive Kwanda Mokoena, who scooped Class C ahead of Class D frontrunners Coetzee, Parker and Sanne.

Jonathan du Toit made it double revenge over Charl Arangies in race 2, with Morgenrood third again. Greg Parton likewise did the GT3 double as he beat Marius Jackson's Audi and Ricky Giannoccaro’s Lamborghini to the National Balance of Performance class win. And Mokoena impressed again as he picked fourth GT3 man Mark du Toit off for seventh en route to the Class C double. Class D winner Ammaar Coetzee was next from Class B winner Jimmy Giannoccaro, du Plessis, Sanne and Parker.

The G+H Extreme Supercars now take a midwinter mini break before heading down to East London to rejoin the National Extreme Festival at the classic, fast Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday 6 August.
