Surprises & Domination as KZN Kicks Karting Season Off

The 2022 South African Rotax Max karting Challenge kicked off with a KwaZulu Natal regional round at the spectacular iDube Raceway on Sunday. It may have been a day of domination, but there were also a few surprises among the results.

Durban’s five times Rotax Max World Champion Cristiano Morgado was perhaps the best surprise as he returned to dominate premier class DD2. He held upcountry visitors, brothers Jamie and Brandon Smith off to defend home honour. Brent Walden was fourth from Nicholas Wuite and DD2 debutant Riley Horner. Shane Foley was another surprise has he won two DD2 Masters races to beat Alistair Mingay, race 2 winner Jonathan Pieterse, Bev and Richard van Heerde, and Chris Grobbelaar.

There were no surprises in Senior Max as SA Junior champion Troy Snyman won, but Yifan Li impressed to take Driver of the Day in second. Corban Spies was third from Jack Rowe, Juandre Nel, Louden Bamford and Hannah Daniel in an impressive field. Richard Horner was another man to dominate Max Master over Allan Johnston and Peter-John Garbutt, while Uzair Khan similarly made Junior Max his own over Maahir Wahab, Dhyvien Naidoo, Dylan Watkins, Jonno Wilson and Travis Yield.

The primary school classes also witnessed a dose of domination as Travis Mingay took a Mini Max triple over Kyle Spies, Harry Rowe, Troy Pieterse and Rayn Asmal. Gauteng visitor Matthew Shuttleworth did the Micro Max triple over Ryan Falconer and Ronaldo Koen did the same over Kayden Pistauer in baby Bambinos. Peter-John Garbutt took a well supported 4-stroke Sprint win over Byron Campbell and Kyle Nivison. Rotax Max regional action now moves to Zwartkops for the first Gauteng round Saturday 12 February.
