Cape karters overcome odd obstacle to race

The Western Cape Rotax Max karters found a rather unusual obstacle to overcome when they arrived at Killarney for their fifth round regional races on Saturday. A renegade group of drifters and spinners had blockaded the circuit in an argument with the local club, but that was quickly resolved once a memorandum was handed over.

And racing commenced, albeit a little later than scheduled, with some unexpected results as the WP competitors raced and finalised their preparations for the coming weekend's nationals at Zwartkops in Pretoria. WP and National DD2 leader Joseph Oelz took a triple DD2 win as Jason Coetzee put one over Sebastian Boyd for third, with two heat seconds to Boyd’s one. Oelz leads Boyd and Coetzee in a WP 1-2-4 in the national chase.

Conor Hughes took no prisoners as he sped to a triple over-32 victory over the duelling Marco Viegas, Andrew Thomas and Jared Jordan in DD2 Masters, but it was a different story in under-15 Junior Max. Valentino Hoffman returned to karting after a while away and made his presence noticed with an opening Junior win, causing WP national hope Reza Levy to fight back to take the class by just a point. Matthew Wadeley was third from Joshua Smit, Oliver Roach and Jaden Jacobs.

Jordon Wadeley and Joshua Smit also caused SA national contender Joaquin de Oliveira to work hard for the under-13 Mini Max win as they shard out the wins, but Joaquin was more consistent to just take the day. Reese Koorzen was fourth from Sabelo Ntuli. And Matthew Chiwara prevented a Beaumont brothers under-11 Micro Max 1-2 behind the dominant Keagan by pipping Aiden to second by a point. Matthew Roach was fourth from Dale Hobbs and Liam Koekemoer.

Michael Danks trotted to a dominant baby Bambino triple win from Liam Wharton, Zach McAuley, Ruan Lewis, Michael O’Mahoney and Zac Boshoff, while Johan Hamman made yet another Clubmans comeback to beat Kyle, Andre and Sean le Riche.

There was also EP Rotax Max action without a strike at Celso Scribante. Byron Teengs beat Daniel Holtzhausen and Marco Scribante in DD2, Caleb Moss beat Josh Moore and Aiden Green in Micro Max and Jack Moore took Bambino from Dylan Bezuidenhout. All Rotax Max eyes are now on Zwartkops this coming weekend as the country’s finest descend on Pretoria for the SA National Finals on Saturday and the Rotax Max African open on Sunday.
