Mist lifts to deliver a fine day’s Rotax racing at iDube

It took a while to get going, but once the early morning mist had risen over iDube, the fourth round of the Kwazulu Natal Rotax Max Karting Challenge delivered a great day’s racing. Proceedings were peppered up by an entourage of upcountry racers joining the fray, but the locals did KZN proud none the less.

Rob Whiting reeled off a trio of wins to take a convincing DD2 gearbox victory over Gauteng top guns Brandon Smith, Niko Zafiris and Jamie Smith, with Jason Reid and Divan Braak next up. It was an all-KZN affair in over-32 DD2 Masters as Jonathan Pieterse won the first two races before hitting trouble in the final. That was still enough for Pieterse to take the day from final race winner Shane Foley as Alistair Mingay fought it out with Bev van Heerde with Chris Grobbelaar looking on.

Unique to KZN, Max Masters for bigger bodied drivers saw Richard Van Heerde take overall honours by two races to one over Richard Horner. Allan John Rice was next up ahead of an oddly off-pace Eric Marzoppi, James Stewart and Peter John Garbutt. Racing on similar chassis to a lower minimum weight, Senior Max saw local hotshot Riley Horner take the win two heats to one over Jack Rowe, who had Juandre Nel all over his back and Daniela Marzoppi, Robert Whiting and Yifan Li leading the pursuit.

Troy Snyman romped to his regulkar under-15 Junior Max triple over Corban Spies and Maahir Wahab, but it was young Travis Mingay who was probably the driver of the day. He fought back to beat hotshot visiting first race winner Caleb Odendaal from East London two races to one to take under-13 Mini Max honours ahead of Dylan Watkins and Travis Yeld. Kyle Spies dominated under-11 Micro Max over Harry Rowe as Busani Sithole pipped Troy Pieterse for third.

A contingent of upcountry Bambino racers were also in town as Santiago Frade overcame Rafael de Sousa for the win over rookie and former world champion Mark’s son Noah Cronje enjoying his best result yet. Locals Troy Pieterse and Kayden Pistaur meanwhile continued their KZN title fight in pursuit. In other action on the day, Jacques Pretorius beat the consistent Kyle Nivison and final race winner Riley Horner to four stroke honours amid an encouraging field and Scott Falconer, Cody Sherratt and Brent Walden shared the Shifter race wins.

Rotax Max’s regional focus shifts Zwartkops next for the fourth round of the Gauteng Challenge on 5 June. Wayland Wyman will be out to repeat his win over Nick Verheul and Nicolas Spanoyannis, while Brandon Smith will want revenge as Eugene Brittz, Erwin Sterne and Philippe Chapat challenge Verheul for Masters honours. It will be all about Tyrone Sterne, Kian Grottis and Olerato Sekudu in Senior Max.

In school kid action, Muhammad Wally will be the lad to beat in Junior Max with Jayden Goosen, Karabo Malemela and Nicolas Vostanis in chase. Wian Boshoff will aim to keep that Mini Max victory advantage over Erich Heystek and Caleb Odendaal and Rafael da Silva will want to build on his Micro Max surprise over Spice Mailula, Kegan Martin and Mattao Mason last time out. Matthew Shuttleworth and Maddox Mason will have Logan Billau, Shayaan Mohamed, Kayde Cornofsky, Rafael De Sousa, Santi Frad and Noah Cronje to deal with in Bambino.
