Jurie Swart takes a Killarney Polo Cup clean sweep

Cape Town home hero Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart opened his 2021 Volkswagen Polo Cup Campaign in perfect style as he stormed to pole position and two race wins at Killarney on Saturday. It was an emphatic victory for the local Alpine Autohaus Racing privateer who raced on his own to overcome the favoured multi-car upcountry Polo Cup teams to the delight of his home track faithful.

“We had an exceptional weekend!” a delighted Umpie admitted. “We were quick all throughout and I was delighted to take pole and Superpole. " I came under some pretty severe pressure in both sectors of that first race, which was eventually declared after a second stoppage. “The biggest challenge is that we are a small one-car show, which makes it tough to fight the big multi-car teams, so to beat them is a huge achievement.

“The second race was even more of a challenge, mainly because the grid is a bit of a lucky packet with the top six drawing our positions out of a hat and I drew third. “I had a good start and settled into second before I made my move on Tate Bishop and took the lead. “From there it was a tactical game of push to pass and Clinton Bezuidenhout managed to get ahead for a lap.

“I re-passed him with a well-timed push to pass out of T5 with two to go a lap later and managed to open a small gap, which I held onto for the win. “That was a brilliant weekend all round — thanks so much to Andrew Goslett of GAP Motorsport, my dad and the rest of the team for a brilliant car.

“We have had a perfect start to the season — now we just need to keep that momentum going when we travel up to Zwartkops on 17 April. “I can’t wait!"
