Rotax Max ready to do battle in Cape Town

It seems an eternity since the second round of the Western Province Rotax Max Challenge karting championship sneaked in to deliver great racing just before Lockdown struck way back in March, but Saturday 5 September will finally see the province’s karters race again, when round 3 goes down at the Killarney Kart Track.

The meeting originally scheduled for 15 August, but delayed a further three weeks, will be run with all MSA lockdown protocols enforced, social distancing maintained throughout, face masks worn at all times and no spectators allowed, among other measures, not that any of that will make an iota of difference out on track.

Expect Sebastian Boyd and Jason Coetzee to keep on fighting the premier gearbox class DD2 after both had decent runs at a splendid opening round national at iDube last week, while the over-30s DD2 Masters madalas promise more spectacular racing, as Jason Greyling, Roy Gruer, Connor Hughes, Andrew Thomas and Jacques de Bruyn fight it out with Jared and Michael Jordan, Robert Peche and Andre Steenkamp.

Senior Max is another Cape Rotax melting pot, where Tate Bishop, Jason Coetzee, Charl Visser and Kai van Zijl look set to continue their spat at that brilliant iDube national, while Kyle Visser will have upstart young guns Reza Levy, Paul Malcolm, Andre and Kyle le Riche, Matthew Wadeley and Mini Max refugee Ethan Stier to deal with the testosterone wrought under-15 Junior Max.

Primary school action will see Reza Levy, Joshua Smit, Ethan Deacon and Jude Stuart fighting it out under 13 Mini Max, while the experienced Joaquin de Oliveira moves into this class and can be expected to be a spanner in the works for the usual frontrunners, while newcomer Liam Crowe makes his karting debut his weekend.

Joshua Smit has waited six months to once again try to topple Reese Koorzen, who was in fine form at last week’s national in under-11 Micro Max. Expect Jordon Wadeley, Keagan Beaumont, Eric Norman, Sabelo Ntuli and Dale Hobbs to also be on point, while Bambino boss Kai van Rensburg will be doing double duty and steps up to do his first Micro race this weekend.

A huge field of Bambinos will be out to stop the so far dominant van Rensburg from romping on, with Siyabonga Ntuli, Matthew Roach, John Norman, Sebastiano Human, Liam Wharton, Zack McAuley, Michael Danks and karting girls Riley Stier and Rebecca Wadeley all obviously itching to get out and racing again after that huge six month pause.

The weekend is also crucial to several drivers’ next national championship preparations, with the double-header second and third rounds of the South African Rotax Max Challenge following at Zwartkops two weeks later, and a good result this weekend will go a long way to arriving there on the front foot. For now however, it's all eyes on Killarney, as the WP series approaches its somewhat delayed mid-season.

This is where we’d normally tell you where to go to watch and all about the great food and the rest at Killarney, but sadly no spectators are allowed under lockdown measures, so watch this space for results and info this weekend and going forward, as the Cape’s Rotax Max karting gang blasts back into flat out action.
