SA karters struggle through Italian storms

The Rotax Max Grand Finals roll on to the finals in In Sarno, Italy today (Saturday 22 October) following a dramatic day of semi finals that saw torrential rain play havoc with many a karting dream on Friday as several South African drivers’ campaigns came to an end. Jayden Els, Eugene Brittz, Justin Allison and Joshua de Paiva will however all go through to their respective Finals today.

The DD2 gearbox class was perhaps worst affected by the rain, with the first Pre-Final even restarted, but South Africa’s Eugene Brittz, who has not raced a kart all year and sneaked into the Grand Finals on a wildcard ticket after a great African Open comeback, thrived in the difficult conditions to drive himself into the finals with a fine come from behind run to 12th to will see him start 24th in today’s Final. He will be joined by Justin Allison who sneaked in with 17th in the interrupted pre-final.

Sadly Fabienne Lanz’s stellar DD2 run was ended when her kart refused to fire up for her pre-final, while the treacherous conditions also transpired to bring young Luca Munaretto and Ivana Cetinich’s promising weeks to an end.

Jayden Els continued his good weekend a strong pre-final result that will see him start 10th in primary school Mini Max, while Joshua de Paiva will line up 32nd in the up to 10-year old Micro Rok.

DD2 Masters for drivers over 31 was similarly affected by the rain, with Nick Verheul, Jonathan Pieterse and Richard Fuller eliminated after Verheul in particular had shown brilliant promise in the earlier dry heats. Delon Thompson and Josh Dias’ Senior Max campaigns came to an end in sodden pre-final, while Cameron O’Connor was likewise eliminated following a very wet high school Junior Max 125cc pre-final
