The past weekend’s Rotax Max regional karting around the country proved quite sensational. There was epic racing in the Cape, Eastern Province and KZN as new faces topped the podium, while upset results and surprises abounded all around the country.

Saturday’s biggest action was at Killarney, where heartening grids in some classes delivered results that went against the form book on many fronts. Not least of all in the 14-kart DD2 race, where former SA champion Sebastian Boyd got one back on his current champion compatriot with a triple victory over Joseph Oelz. Even better was a delighted Andrew Thomas’ DD2 Masters win — he took it two race victories to one over reigning Cape Masters champion Conor Hughes.

There were two more champion slaying performances in both Cape Senior and Junior Max too. Storm Lanfear took a maiden Senior Max overall win after SA champion Tate Bishop ran into trouble in the final heat, with Tristan de Nobrega third. Matthew Wadeley similarly benefited when WP Junior Max champion Reza Levy found problems in the middle high school heat. That meant Wadeley took his first overall victory over Levy, Joshua Smit and Jaden Jacobs.

The WP primary school classes however went to form. Joaquin de Oliveira bounced back from a first heat crash to win the other races to take the day from Reese Koorzen, Keagan Beaumont and Jordon Wadeley after Joshua Smit won heat 1. There were no such issues for Keagan Beaumont, who romped to a Micro Max triple over Dale Hobbs, Aiden Beaumont and Liam Koekemoer. And Zach McAuley beat Michael Danks two Bambino races to one with Siyabonga Ntuli third.

700 km to the east at Celso Scribante in Gqeberha meanwhile, Byron Teengs held former SA karting champion and Polo Cup star, Clinton Bezuidenhout off for the DD2 win with Deon Verster and Daniel Holtzhausen next up after Bezuidenhout stepped back in a kart for the first time in a while. It was a family affair in Micro Max as Josh beat Jack Moore and Caleb Moss, while Jack Moore beat Dylan Bezuidenhout and Isla Nagura in Bambino.

Moving a similar distance further northeast on Sunday, the KZN Rotax Max season came to a close at iDube. Brent Walden continued the upset pattern there, when he beat KZN king Robert Whiting to take the iDube DD2 overall win two races to one, with Niko Zafiris third from Reval Gayadin. It was ops normal in DD2 Masters as Jonathan Pieterse beat Shane Foley two races to one with Alistair Mingay very much in the mix in third.

SA junior champion Troy Snyman stepped up to Senior Max and trotted to a triple win over Riley Horner, Jack Rowe and Juandre Nel. Richard Van Heerde fought Richard Horner off to the Max Masters win as Allan John Rice took Silver Cup. There was another shake-up in Junior Max where Uzair Khan  romped to a triple win over Jonno Wilson, Corban Spies. Kyle Spies took the Micro win from Harry Rowe and Busani Sithole and Kayden Pistauer beat Busani Sithole in Bambino.

The next Rotax Max regional action is a Gauteng round at Formula K in Benoni this coming Saturday 6 November
