Investchem championship races into the final stretch

With Andrew Rackstraw already confirmed as South Africa’s 2021 Investchem Formula 1600 champion and Jarrod Waberski as runner up, the focus shifts to the lucrative fight for third in the championship at Zwartkops’ finale, Saturday 23 October. Cape Town lad Rackstraw was dominant in his performance through 2021, winning 11 of the 12 races so far in his march to the title in his RDSA Investchem Mygale. He was only once beaten by Waberski’s yellow DAW machine.

Rackstraw of course wants to make it 13 out of 14 wins in Pretoria, but those wins could also seal the title third. Which is something that is likely top of mind for top rookie Josh Le Roux and his ICLA New Heights Mygale. Le Roux sits third in the title chase, just four points clear of veteran Nicholas van Weely's Magnificent Paints & Hardware van Diemen. But neither of their positions is by any means secure.

That's because Alex Vos and his Ecurie Zoo DV Mygale, Ewan Holtzhausen’s Total Plastics Mygale and Abacus Divisions Mygale brothers, Antwan and Gerard Geldenhuys are all within a dozen or so points of third man le Roux. And never rule out Andrew Schofield's Fly Safair Mygale, Brendan Tracey’s Investchem Mygale and racing lady Taya van der Laan's Macrocom TNT racing either.

The wings & slicks Investchem Formula 1600s will be joined by a few old school treaded tyre Formula Ford 1600s racing for the fun of it once again at Zwartkops. They include former saloon car and cross country star Duncan Vos driving brother Graham's Ecurie Zoo van Diemen taking on another old fox, Mr Investchem Ian Schofield in his Investchem Mygale this weekend. Also expect Allen Meyer’s Investchem van Diemen and Ronald van Weely’s similar Magnificent Paints & Hardware machine, and Graham Hepburn, among others there.

Getting back to Investchem Formula 1600, that championship third is still a big deal. See, with Andrew Rackstraw already having wrapped up the quarter-million rand winner's purse and a test drive in both a GTC and a Formula Renault 3.5 racer, and Waberski having tied up the R125,000 second place prize with a GTC test, the R62,500 third place prize and a GTC test are still up for grabs. As is the R30,000 for fourth place, R15,000 for fifth and ten grand for sixth. So it’s all very much to play for.

Remember too, that a limited number of spectators are finally allowed to watch racing again. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis from the Zwartkops track office. The racing will also be live streamed via the Extreme Festival social media platforms.
