Two thirds for van der Watt’s AutoZone Focus at Red Star

Julian van der Watt came back from Red Star’s sixth round Global Touring Car races happy with his progress and pace in his Autozone Ford Focus RS. Van der Watt qualified third and came home third in the opening heat, before surviving another skirmish with a rival to end up third in the reverse-grid second race after the rival who barged past was handed a penalty for his efforts. Julian ended up fourth for the day.

“We had a tough, but encouraging outing at Red Star,” Julian reported. “My AutoZone Ford Focus RS GTC had really good pace this weekend, starting with the fastest lap of the day in practice on Friday. “I qualified third and we dialled in the setup to post among the fastest and most consistent times in the opening race, where I brought the car home in third place.

“I started fourth in the second reverse-grid race and pushed hard from the off. “I was unfortunately once again punted off the track by the same competitor who was involved in my previous incident in East London. Luckily though, the car was in a good enough condition to keep going to not only recover from the hit, but also to bring it home again in third place.

“That gives us good momentum going in to the next round at Zwartkops on 23 October knowing the Autozone Ford has good pace — we will keep pushing to bring the car right to the front of the grid. A huge word of thanks to my sponsors at AutoZone, for the continued support they give and a big thank you to WCT Engineering for the preparation of the car and their assistance, as always throughout the race weekend. “Roll on Zwartkops!"
