Red Star fails to shine for Umpie

While Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart heads back to Cape Town keen to forget a quite literally painful weekend at Delmas’ Red Star Raceway, he does so proud having shaken up the Falken Polo Cup establishment through the past season.

“The Red Star weekend was nothing to really write home about, but it was also the final instalment of a brilliant championship for us and I am delighted to have ended up fourth overall with a race win under my belt,” Umpie admitted. “We are a tiny team racing out of Cape Town against several professional upcountry outfits, so I take it as a feather in our cap to have been right in there throughout the season.

“This weekend was not good - we made the wrong tyre choice in qualifying and that set the tone for a tough weekend in the mid-pack trenches. “That also put us at risk and the inevitable happened — one of the backmarkers somehow forgot to brake early on in the first race and ploughed into me and another car and took us all out of the race.

“I dislocated my shoulder in the incident and was in quite a lot of pain, but we managed to get the car back into the second heat. “It was nowhere near right, so I was happy to grab a few points in tenth, even if that was three short of keeping third in the championship, but that’s racing.

“I need to thank my sponsors G-Energy Lubricants and everyone in the team —  Gozzi and the GAP Motorsport guys for the tireless effort on the car, to Zak and my dad and everyone who had a hand in this special season. “Now we cannot wait for 2020 - we will be back, quicker and better with a season under our belt — bring it on!”
