Swart races to Killarney GTi honours

Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart put his Burly Pro GTi championship hopes back on track with an overall win at Killarney over the weekend. Swart has had a tough time of it of late aboard his Alpine Autohaus/RDK Plant GAP Motorsport Polo 6R in his home championship, but a strong showing over the weekend with a win and a second place in the races sees him back into tight class title second.

“Well that was a better weekend in the GTi Challenge!” Umpie acknowledged. “It’s always great to add to the trophy collection, but it is even better to put the drama of the last few races behind us. “Qualifying went well and I ended second just a few tenths off Nian du Toit and ahead of Jano van der Westhuizen and Colin Meder on the grid and I was dicing Jano for second when Nian slowed early on. “I then found a way past Jano and managed to fight him off for the win.

“We knew it would be difficult to stop Nian considering we had the full 30kg penalty ballast and he had none and my tyres were well past it on a very hot track in the second race, but I gave it my very best and ended up a very close second to him in the end. “We won the day, which is great, but best of all, we are now back in second in the championship chase — it's unlikely that we can catch Nian at this stage, but now we are in a brilliant 3-point fight with Jano and Colin for that second place, so bring it on!

“Now it’s all eyes on our next appointment in the national championship Falken Polo Cup at home at Killarney at the end of the month — we won here last time out so there is only one mission this time and that is to repeat that success and do it for our new Polo sponsors G-Energy. Can’t wait — bring it on!”
