Border race championships set to star

It may just be two weeks since the Extreme Festival nationals visited the East London Grand Prix Circuit, but the locals will be back at it Saturday 14 September, when the Border Modifieds, Historic and two-wheelers turn out to thrill the home crowd. And don’t think that the racing is any poorer at regional level — if anything it even gets a bit better with a little backyard aggro.

Last weekend saw Bevan Swartz and his Class A+ TSE Corvette dominate the Border Modified races that ran alongside the nationals, but this weekend they top the bill and there are a few men looking to stem that tide. Among them are Shaun Gladwell’s trick BMW, Owen Bridget's turbo Honda Civic and Johan van der Westhuizen's Hi-Way Camaro. Add Class B rivals Francwa Coetzer (Stutt Garage Tigra), Kean Barnard (GB Harper V8), Julian Herman (Strictly Polo Turbo), Bruce Butler (HR Focus Nardini) and Troy Marais (Harper) for good measure.

Class C men Richard Clark (Motor 1 Honda Civic) and Jeff Hall (Birkin 7) will continue their ongoing tussle, while Class D should see Sharniel Holmes (Selago Golf), Sean Heideman (Golf) and Cameron Hall (BMW) dicing ahead of the girl power Class E Brat Pack, where Ashton Nell (Pro CV Golf), Melindre (HR Focus Opel) and Cherne Marais (GB Golf) are as ever ready to take it to the lads.

East London enjoys an extraordinary Historic Racing class and they will be looking forward to a good old hometown spat following a couple of meetings dicing Jozi and PE visitors too. Danian Staffan (du Randt’s), Derek Boy and Alex Gudmanz glorious Ford Capri Perana V8s will take on Mike Forsyth's Backdraft Cobra, Darron Gudmanz (Car Connexion Mazda) and Donovan Collins (BMW 635CSi) ahead of smaller class cars including Brendan Smith, Gary Schulz and Quentin Lessing’s Ford Escorts, Graham Lessing’s Cortina, Andrew Karshagen’s Capri and Graeme Musto's Mini, among others.

The Border bikers will be at it again too, with Jason Lamb's Spindrift Kawasaki taking on Chris Webster, Gerrit Nel, Jono Webster, and Nathan Ashington, as well as Travis Warne, Bradley Rehse, Michael Smal, Sazi Patela, Lodewyk Hattingh and Gerrie Havenga among those racing on two wheels.

Race fans can purchase early bird tickets from the BMSC Office, at several city outlets or at the gate on raceday. Contact 043 736 4024, office@bmsc.co.za or visit www.bmsc.co.za for more. The Grand Prix Circuit is among the most picturesque racetracks on the planet and the racing is always well worth watching — sounds like a great reason to drag out those deck chairs, the brolly and crack a few trackside frosties…
