Yesterday’s racers set for Zwartkops

Historic Racing South Africa returns to home ground when the series’ three classes race in Pretoria on Saturday 7 September, following its away race adventures in East London last time out. The classic Sports & GTs, Universal Health Pre-80 Saloon Cars and Charlie's SuperSpar Historic Pursuit series will celebrate spring in classic style at Zwartkops Raceway.

All eyes will be on a strong Universal Health Pre-80 Saloon Car field, where Class F driver Sean Hepburn’s HiQ Datsun 1200 leads the title chase over Class F Mercedes 280 man Hubi van Moltke and Andre ten Napel’s TNMC Scirocco. The race up front will however likely see Johann Smith’s SPS Mazda Capella, Sophos Pantazis' Datsun 240Z and Rene Janse van Rensburg, Alan Green and Peter Jenkins’ rapid Ford Escorts dicing hard.

There’s always action among the Universal Pre 80 classes too, where Jan Jacobs 1965 Alfa Romeo GT Junior, Marco Rossi's GTV 6 and John Simpson's Alfa Romeo, the rest of the Mercedes 280 gang including Fanie Klopper and Johann van der Walt, Harm Beens' H3 Generator Works Escort and Johan Swanepoel’s Fiat 124 Sport will be in action.

The HRSA Sports & GTs will share the track with a few local classes and a variety of muscle and sports cars on Saturday, but expect a fleet of Historic Porsche 911 RSRs including the rapid Richard Schuhardt (R5 Botswana), George Avvakoumides (Ocean Basket), Stefan Snyders (Stetn Investments), and Peter Bailey (Bailey Cars) to star among them.

The Charlie’s SuperSpar Historic Pursuit series works on handicap in Trophy and Fine Car classes for a breathtaking finish every time among a splendid variety of cars. That includes everything from Kola de Klerk’s Nissan 300 3X, Frans Venter (Datsun 280Z), Porsche 924 duo Brad Schafer, Althea Pretorius and Werner Hatzenberg (Aircooled Porsche 928) and newcomer Tiaan Vermeulen's Rover SD 3500, to exotics like debutant, Jacques Lourmeau’s Marpine Lotus 7, Robbie Frank (Elemental Lotus 23B) and Rikus Botha’s MG.

More regular cars star too, like Henk de Klerk’s Pajero Honda, Mercedes trio Andre Hattingh, Machiel Oberholzer (Aquaperm) and Nadine von Moltke Todd; Michael Mateus (Renato BMW M535), Rob Clark's Containerforce Citroen, Michelle Smith (SPS Skyline) and Escort duo Rob van Aarle (Ace) and Harm Beens Jr. (H3 Generator) and Johan Swanepoel (Fiat 124 Sport), while Wynand du Plessis makes a welcome return in  his Toyota MR2 after engine surgery.

The Historic classes run as part of a full Zwartkops race day Saturday 7 September - sounds like a great reason for an outing to the races!
