Sports & GTs, Saloons & Pursuit off to Delmas

Historic Racing heads to red Star Raceway near Delmas for its fourth round races Saturday 22 June, with the classic Sports & GTs, Universal Health Pre-80 Saloon Cars and Charlie's SuperSpar Historic Pursuit cars out to chase championship points at what ought to be a chilly midwinter’s meeting.

The Porsche 911 RSR-rich Sports & GTs promise another bout of those Stuttgart supercars versus the rest with Rui Campos (Me, Myself & I), Brian Algar, Fred Konig, Stefan Snyders (Spear Management) and Stefan Puschavez (MI Equipment) already all entered among the Porsche parade, along with Kola de Klerk (Nissan 300 ZX).

Sophos Pantazis 1969 Datsun 240Z was the car to beat in the Universal Healthcare Pre 80 Saloons last time out, closest rivals Rene Janse van Rensburg and Peter Jenkins' Ford Escorts and Andre Ten Napel (TNMC '76 Scirocco). The competition should be keener this time around with Stuart Konig and Jannie van Rooyen's Sciroccos, Johann Smith’s SPS Mazda Capella and Alan Green’s Ford Escort in the mix.

Also expect the classes to entertain with the likes of Sean Hepburn’s HiQ Midrand Datsun 1200 Delux, Stewart McLarty’s ex Don Bruins Telscrew Mazda 323, Jan Jacobs’ Olifantsfontein Alfa Romeo GT Junior, the Mercedes 280 gang including Hubi van Moltke, Fanie Klopper and Johann van der Walt, Harm Beens' H3 Generator Ford Escort, Johan Swanepoel’s Fiat 124 Sport and Rob Clark’s entertaining Citroen to entertain.

Charlie’s Historic Pursuit is racing with a difference — instead of cars lining up on the grid in fastest to slowest order and blasting off all together, this one works on handicap with the cars setting off one by one and if the handicappers get it right, they should all arrive at the finish at once! This makes for most entertaining racing as the grid comes together in the last laps for a truly grandstand finish - and literally anyone can win.

So while the likes of Dennis McBeath’s '64 Mpiti was the quickest car last time out, Rob Clark was first away in his listing Containerforce Citroen GS Club and Michael Mateus won the first race in his ’81 Renato BMW M535. This weekend sees the usual varied Charlies Pursuit grid with Fines class entries from the likes of Clive Winterstein Casheri Restorations Porsche 356A, Henk de Klerk’s Pajero Maintenance Honda Easy and Mercedes trio Andre Hattingh (Hattingh Motors), Machiel Oberholzer (Aquaperm) and Jose Vasques.

Add Michelle Smith’s SPS Racing Skyline and Escort duo Rob van Aarle (Ace Auto Salvage) and Harm Beens Jr. (H3 Generator), while Trophy class entries include Robbie Frank (Elemental Analytics EA Lotus 23B), Althea Pretorius (Carinvest Porsche 924), Johan Swanepoel (Fiat 124 Sport), Kola de Klerk (Nissan 300 3X) and Stan Stacey (Coastal West Alfa GTV6)

The HRSA classes run as part of a full Red Star race program Saturday 22 June. Red Star Raceway is on the Zonderfout Farm near Delmas, just off the Groenfontein-Dryden Turn Off Exit 485 on the N12 freeway towards Witbank.
