Aberdein on form in Austrian F3

Cape Town’s Jonathan Aberdein enjoyed a splendid weekend of FIA European Formula 3 racing with three podium finishes at Austria’s Red Bull RIng. Aberdein qualified fifth for the first two races before bringing it home seventh and sixth to stand on the rookie podium each time. Jonathan then brought it home third overall despite huge pressure from behind in the final.

“That was a pretty good weekend,” Jonathan smiled. “It was great to stand on the podium in all three races, with the last one being the main podium too, so all good in Austria. “The first heat was wet and my mid race pace was very strong — I ran in sixth for most of the race but my teammate Juri Vips found a way past in the end.

“Qualifying for races 2 and 3 went very well, so I started fifth in race 2 and I came home sixth, but the final was mega and quite tough with Tictum on the rear — I had a good start and ran a good pace through the race so I’m happy with another overall podium — that really makes all the effort we put in worth the while.”

Jonathan’s late rookie season charge has seen him up to 12th overall in the hugely competitive FIA European Formula 3 championship and sixth in the rookie standings with one race left to run at Hockenheim 13-14 October.
