Wild day sees Coetzee into title lead

Durbanville racer Jason Coetzee overcame a few challenges to emerge from Saturday’s home town Rotax Max karting national at Cape Town’s Killarney Kart track with a win and the championship lead in Senior Max, while he also moved up the DD2 championship log with a solid sixth overall in that super competitive class.

“That was a most eventful day!” Jason admitted. “I qualified on pole position in Senior Max and won the first heat, but we struggled with brake problems all day and came second in race 2 after struggling to stop the kart later in the race. “We managed to fix the problem for the final and we won that one to take the overall win for the day and jump from fifth into the championship lead, so yeah — it was a pretty good weekend in Senior.

“It was a pretty mad day in DD2 though — we had an issue with the wiring loom, which caused my kart to splutter intermittently, so it was pretty frustrating but we came right later on and I put it on pole for the final. “We knew that it was going be a hectic race and that’s exactly what happened — it was red flagged on the first lap, when my teammate Umpie Swart was basically driven out of the kart, which was destroyed.

I’m glad Umpie is okay, but the race was restarted and I found myself fighting for the lead in a multi-kart war and ended up fourth in the race and sixth overall for the day in DD2 to make up two championship positions to 8th. “I must thank my parents; my mechanic Cleopas Mbawa for all his hard work and making my Senior setup perfect and fast; SAKRA and Leeroy and Lyle Poulter and the Extreme Team for all the effort.”
