Fastest laps, good points haul for Jonathan

South African Jonathan Aberdein enjoyed a positive FIA European Formula 3 weekend at Spa Francorchamps over the weekend. Aberdein qualified 10th, 13th and fifth for the three races before setting the fastest lap of the second race as he stormed from 16th to seventh and then bringing it home seventh in the finale as he showed quick pace throughout and scored solid championship points in the second and third heats.

“That was a pretty positive weekend,” Capetonian Jonathan grinned. “Spa Francorchamps is one of the great racetracks in the world — you can pass here with the long straights and we did quite a lot of that this weekend! “Unfortunately the first race ended with an early shower — I had moved up to 8th and had contact with one of my teammates who did not see me in the mirrors as I dived for a pass for seventh — there was damage and I was forced to retire.

“To make things worse, I was slapped with a three-place penalty and started 16th in race 2, but that turned out to be a great race — I made up seven places and set the quickest lap of the race and then started the finale in fifth and enjoyed an another excellent race, I set lots of purple sectors in tricky conditions at the start with half the circuit dry and half wet. “I was quickest of all again with three laps to go and brought it home seventh with more points on the board.

“I am up to seventh in the Rookie championship and we’re looking forward to racing on another epic circuit at Silverstone next on 18 and 19 August, so I hope to deliver another strong performance there too. “Thanks to my team Motopark and all my supporters — Spa certainly was a weekend to remember!
