Another pole and good pace for Lupini

Giordano Lupini finally broke his run of bad luck with a positive weekend racing his Accelerate 102/CIR/La Vie de Luc Golf 1 GTi at Killarney’s fifth round Burly Pro GTi Challenge races on Saturday. Franschhoek matriculant Lupini qualified an impressive pole position for Class C on a damp track, but a poor start saw him working hard to fight back in race 1, before a thrilling race-long dice that saw him end up fourth within three-tenths of a second behind the race winner in the second heat.

“I was really happy with my second pole position on the trot, especially considering that this one was in the wet and I was also on pole for the last race in a dry session,” Giordano admitted. “I was really annoyed to mess up my start in race 1 though — it dropped me down to tenth, but I had a great fight back to fourth, although Chris Swart proved a bit of a road block in that last pass and we gently touched and it was enough to puncture my tyre and cost me two places to end up sixth. “Not a perfect race but at least we made it through a first race for the first time in a while!

“The second race was brilliant — I started sixth and lost a couple of places, so had to fight back again but I was soon fourth a few seconds behind the top three. “It took a few laps, but I reeled them in and enjoyed a brilliant dice with Jacques Geldenhyus, Dario and Marco Busi to end up fourth just three-tenths of a second ahead of class winner Jacques with the Busi brothers between us!

“Most importantly, we had a pretty clean weekend at last and I know that that last little bit needs to come from within. “Special thanks to my sponsors Accelerate 102 Special Gasoline, CIR Construction, La Vie de Luc Mineral Water and AcciDent Guru and to my team and supporters — that was a far better weekend, but there’s definitely more to come.”
